Hello Ladies,

I had my HSG a couple of weeks ago. There is an interesting post here about HSG which you may find helpful.

I didnt realised that due to a previous proceedure to have abnormal cells removed from my cervix, that there would be scar tissue. This made it difficult to get the tube through my cervix. The nurse and radiographer did it the end by improvising with some other equipment but if I had read this blog post, I might have had some ideas to pass on to them.

Other than that it was fine. The nurse told me that pain was difficult to predict in women but I can say that it didnt hurt while they were finding the hole in the cervis or passing the tube through and pushing the dye in. It only hurt a bit on one side as the dye went through to the end of the tubes but that seemed to be because I had a slight blockage. The pain was very brief and then I just felt a little crampy for an hour. After that nothing at all.

They took an x-ray about once a second so you could see the progression of the dye. In fact I found it quite interesting to see my insides on the screen and watching as the dye filled my uterus. They also told me at the time that both tubes were now all clear so we could go ahead with our referral for IUI.

May I join you all? I'm still waiting for AF to come. And I'll be scheduled for a HSG after that. May I ask, were you offered the option of having General Anaesthetic??? FS said that if I went to the hospital, they can give me GA and I'm seriously considering that.... cos I don't think FS is the most gentle person for a HSG....

This is very interesting Fluffy. I've also had some abnormal cells removed from my cervix, so maybe I'll have the same problem. I hope not!

Did they say anything about the scar tissue being a possible cause of not conceiving? I had previously googled this and hadn't found anything that says it can cause problems with fertility. I had my abnormal cells removed 9 years ago.

Fluffy thanks for the post!! Excellent and like you & Tomo I've also had abnormal cells removed & that's something I didn't mention to the specialest. Never even thought that might be something to consider. Thanks!!!

Cherrios - I just got done with AF and waiting by the phone for them to give me a date. I will have the IUI scheduled for next month but after reading so many good things about HSG I'm a tid bit hopeful that maybe it could happen this month after the HSG?!??!? Well if not we are prepared for the next step!

Tomo and PR&TR13 - My accupuncturist first mentioned it saying that it could cause problems with TTC but I asked my gp and she said that proiding you are stil getting periods after you had the procedure done then there is no reason why sperm cant get through.
I didnt give it much further thought until I was having the HSG and they said the hole in the cervix was so tight! I said that I once had a coil fitted and they coulndnt understand why they were having problems, until I mentioned that since then I had had a loop biopsy to remove abnormal cells. They immediatey said that would explain it.

I guess it really depends on exactly where on your cervix the area of cells were that were removed. Just bear it in mind if they have any trouble during your HSG and ask if they have any tapered tubs to try as that worked for me. Im sure you will all be fine.

Thanks for the good luck with IUI. I rang the fertility nurse and our HIV and hep B and c results are back so they are now filling out te referral forms.

Thanks Fluffy, that's really helpful. I do have regular 28 day periods so hopefully that's not the problem and we've just been "unlucky" I did mention it to our FS in your first meeting, he made a note of it, but didn't say anything else about it. I guess time will tell.

How many days after AF did you have the test done?

I got a call them telling me that they recieved the advance payment (by paying ahead it's cheaper) & will schedule the test but they've not called me back and Im really wanting it before O. I hope they call me back soon!!!!!

Can you call the back to organise it?

I was told that you could only have it up to day 10 but it had to be after you stopped bleeding. Therefore it is usually between CD6 - CD10.

I was told to tring on the first day of my next cycle so that they coud book me in. However, I was on day 5 at the time ofmy FS appoint so called the x-ray department the next day (cd6) and they fittedme in the following day(cd7).
