IUI vs. ICI

I know nothing about either one of these treatments (is that the right word?)

My husband and I just had to terminate a pregnancy due to a genetic condition. Our son was born last year and only lived two weeks due to the same condition. (My husband has a balanced translocation and our son and this last baby had an unbalanced translocation)

We're considering IVF with PGD, but it's so expensive. We're also considering using a sperm donor which is where the IUI or ICI would come in, I think. I haven't done any research about any of this.

Fertility is not an issue in that I've been able to get pregnant, we just can't get the genes to line up right.

What's the difference in success rates and cost for IUI and ICI (or whatever its called)?

Any experience with any of this?

Thanks!

Sorry I dont know what ICI is? IUI could be a good choice for you if you use doner sperm seeing as you do not have any troubles. Here is Canada at my clinic its $350 for the actual IUI then any drugs on top of that which might be a couple of hundred more (clomid was $80 and ovidrel trigger shot was $80). I think the sperm washing is included in the $350 but Ive heard of other places it being extra and people paying up to $1000.

very sorry for your loss and good luck with what you choose

i think you mean ivf with icsi...icsi is finding a genetically good sperm and injecting it directly into the egg that is genetically good so you can weed out the ones with the chromosomal issues.
i see alot of threads on here and i hope someone can help you out!

First off, I am so sorry you have to go through this. I couldn't imagine losing a little one after birth. May God bless you both!

Regarding your questions, ICI places the sperm NEAR the cervix, whereas IUI places the sperm through the cervix.

A lot of people who have zero fertility issues, prefer to use ICI with donor sperm. Mostly because this can be done at home and fairly inexpensive (there are some threads about this on this forum).

IUI can also be used but is more expensive because it requires your husbands (or the donor sperm) to be washed. You can not place a fresh specimen directly through the cervix because the semen causes the uterus to contract.

I think IVF would be your last ditch effort. But I would definitely give ICI a try with donor sperm before moving onto anything invasive.

UNLESS, of course, you definitely want to use your husbands sperm. There are ways to weed out the sperm you don't want...unfortunately it's a hefty price...but you could still try IUI with that process and it's still cheaper than IVF.

Hopefully that helps a smidgin? Good luck!!!!!

I'm not sure what I mean to be honest.

I think there are two ways to do it...one way where they insert the semen/sperm into your uterus (I think that IUI) and one where they insert the semen/sperm by your cervix. (That's what I thought ICI was)

I've confused myself to the point where I don't even know what to google.

You got it right!

IUI --inside uterus (Intrauterine insemination) BUT with IUI- you have to WASH the sperm.
ICI --outside the uterus, but close to the opening of the cervix (Intracervical Insemination).

That helps a ton!

We've only just begun talking about this stuff. I'm still healing (emotionally and physically) from the last pregnancy ending. I'm fairly certain that IVF with PGD isn't a realistic option for us. Financially, it doesn't make sense. We could very easily spend all of that money and not have any usable embryos. It's so expensive that we probably couldn't afford to do it more than once.

I haven't mentioned the at home method to my husband. I wonder if he'd go for that...hmmm....
