Do IVF babies get screened for genetic problems?

Hi all,

as the title says, I'm not really sure how the process works, but I possibly have muscular dystrophy, if I do then there is a 50% chance that I pass it on to my children.

Me and OH do want more children, I wondered if I were to have IVF would they screen the egg to see if it has a genetic problem?

Hope this makes sense.

xx

I work in the NHS (UK) so can give you an answer regarding them.

The regular answer is no. IVF babies are not usually screened for genetic problems.

But, if one or both parents have a condition where there is specific gene defect which has been detected, you could under go pre implantationn genetic screening (google PGD) but this will depend on the hospital you are having treatment from.

sounds like your need comfirmation of diagnosis and whether is is a specific inherited gene defect, then you will know if you need PGD
