AMH almost tripled!!! Confused!?

Hi Everyone.

This is my first time back on here since I started down the IVF route. Started investigating egg sharing programme at LWC Swansea and beginning the process. Had initial consultaion Jan 25th. Waited until new cycle for AMH on cycle day 4 (Feb 14th). Results on Feb 28th were heart breaking. Only 9.67 (or 1.42 if I did my maths correct)! I was so upset coz wasn't expecting any problems. Dr said we could have one more chance. Let them know when next period started then go in for a baseline scan. If I had a count of 10 or more antral follicles then we could decide if we wanted to repeat the AMH bloods. Baseline scan on Mar 11th showed 8 on my right and 10 on my left. Good count but had to decide whether it was worth spending the money on another AMH if it was likely to come back the same. I asked the nurse "Can AMH levels change?" She said "They can but usually not by much". Decided to go ahead with a repeat AMH hoping it would be above 10 as then we would be able to try egg share. Waited nervously for appointment to go see them for the result on Mar 29th but they called us on 26th saying "No need to come and see us, your AMH is fine and we can egg share. Have you had your counselling session?" I was stunned! Arranged the counselling and next set of bloods for Apr 11th and asked her what my AMH level came back as coz it was so low last time. She said "It came back as 26.33 which is fine for egg share." I wa so excited but soon the questions settled in as to how my AMH could almost triple! I changed nothing in my diet or lifestyle between tests. Anyone else had a big AMH difference? Could it drop again?

I know its long winded but thanx for taking the time to read my ramblings

to everyone

AMH shouldn't really increase at all, it should only decline. Personally though i don't think it's the robust test it's meant to be.

I do know that the sample is very sensitive to lab/handling error though, but either way your antral follicle count is what matters for the here and now in IVF.

I've had my amh tested 3 times, the first it came back as 8.2 and I was gutted, in disbelief almost so had it re-tested and it came back as over double at 16.8.

I then had it tested a 3rd time, I needed to know which was correct! and it came back again at 8.2.

My antral follicle counts were always over 20 though, so my amh was not a good reflection of my current status, in IVF I retrieved plenty of eggs.

Good Luck

Thanks _Nell

I was aware AMH shouldn't change much because I looked into how I could improve it after my first low result. So glad you said the samples are sensitive to lab handling! That was only thing I could put the difference down to. And while your antral follicles were over 20 and mine was only 18, she did struggle to see my antral follicles and counted twice while I had to use fists to press down over my ovaries for her to see better so I could have over 20 antral follicles myself. Feel happier now.

I am currently going for more bloods and counselling on Weds (Apr 11th). Got to wait 4 weeks for those results so around May 9th and then I believe I need to be matched with another woman's cycle. (I'm egg sharing.) Did you have any other tests? As I'm sure you felt too, I can't wait to get the injections underway and feeling like its actually happening and we have a chance at finally getting our BFP.

Hope all is going well for you

18, 20 both are great numbers and don't reflect our amh
Pushing down with the fists is normal too

You might find your count increases, antral follicles are 2-6mm so if you have lots that are 2mm it's easy to miss....then once you start the injections they are easier to count as they grow, then harder again as they get big and your ovaries full

I didn't egg share, but I gather there are a few extra tests you have to have, good luck with your next bloods and I hope it doesn't take too long to get matched

Hi _Nell

The lady tried counting my follicles without my fists pushing down so thought it was just my body being an awkward arse

Going to start a new thread asking any other egg sharers about how many tests they had and how long it takes to match with another woman. Thanks for your help. You have made me feel lots better about my AMH levels being so varied
