Help, need advice!! Sick baby.. temperature 39.1'C

Hi there
last night we noticed Noah temperature getting very high and his breathing was very short and fast and he was very limp, diahorrea and vomiting etc. I phoned out of hours at 5am and they said to take him straight to A&E which I did. We were there for 4 hours and they said that there was no obvious answer for it, his urine sample was clear, there was no sound of mucus in his chest. Basically he was back to him normal self, giggling and playing so they sent us home. His temp was still high at this point. I was suffering from a vomiting bug yesterday so they said that it was probably that that was making him like this.

Anyway he seems to be alright in himself but when hes sleepy or trying to sleep his temperature rockets and his breathing gets very short and fast. He is absoloutely shattered as the fever is keeping him awake. I phoned the out of hours about 10 mins ago and explained the situation and how his temperature was up at 39.1 and his breathing had gotten worse and they said I will be waiting an hour and a half for a doctor to call back.
Im just not really sure what to do, if I take him to A&E again it will waken him up and he'll be 'fine' again. Its only really when he is sleeping it gets bad.
Ive given him calpol, nurofen, bathed him in lukewarm water to bring his temperature down and im currently holding a cool flannel on his head but its not working

any advice? I cant stand seeing my baby like this, he is really trying his best to be in good spirits but he is so obviously not well and is absoloutely exhausted as hes only slept 5 hours in the last 24 hours

If you've given him ibuprofen and his temp remains as high then I'd definitely take him back to A&E. If the medicines do bring the temp down then i'd strip him down, keep with calpol and Nurofen (at the appropriate doses) and keep a close eye on him.

Temperatures are cyclic - if his temp spiked in the night yesterday, it's likely to do similar at the same time today.

I would say, if in doubt seek medical help. I'm sure he'll be fine in a day or two. It's so worrying though isn't it. I hope he's soon fighting fit

Out of hours doctor phoned and said to keep giving him paracetamol and ibruprofen for his temp. Apparently theres a viral infection goin around so it could be that.

Just managed to get LO to sleep in my bed and his temp seems to have gone down and his breathing has slowed a bit too which is a good sign

Thanks for taking the time to reply WW1 thought i might have got a bit more help from other users but oh well!

Hi, we where through something similar this week. In the beginning we just had fever (40c) and no other symptoms. The doc checked him and couldn't find anything. The next day he started turning blue because of high fever, so we took him to A&E again, and this time they did X-Rey, urine sample and troat swab. Was given calpol and ibuprofen!
The swab came back with adenovirus . After 4 days the temp sudenly disappeared. And after 6 days he was back to himself.
The shirt breathing is due to high temp. Don't worry.

Now I got the virus and has the same problem, the moment I sleep my temp goes up imidiatly. I am in pain all over my body and can't eat cos I have belly ache!
