Infant gaviscon and constipation

Hi,

My lo is 7 weeks and been on gaviscon for 4 days for reflux. It's worked wonders but she's really constipated.

Has anyone changed to a different medication because of constipation? X

my LO is almost 7 weeks old and we were given gaviscon and domperidone for reflux. we stopped the domperidone after 24 hours as it seemed to make him worse. he cried all the time and acted like he had trapped wind or tummy ache.

gaviscon worked but he had more than 6 bottles in 24 hours so we couldnt put it in every bottle. a chemist recommended sma staydown milk and he has been a different baby since started it. reflux is much better and he is far more settled. he doesn't have any medicine at all now. that may be worth a try? we have had no constipation at all on it.

My LO had reflux for around 2 months and it gave her absolutely terrible constipation! Like piercing screaming everytime she tried to go. She was kept on that medication by the doctors but we balanced it out by giving prune juice and water everyday. I also got my hv to show me baby-massage techniques to help with constipation.
Using both together this worked for our little girl. It was a fine balance between meds and prune juice though and I was so pleased when the hv eventually advised to wean her early.
As soon as we started her on solids the reflux went entirely. I think constipation is a common side effect of most reflux meds tbh. They all contain thickeners to weigh the milk down LO's tummy and stop it reappearing.

Good luck with your bubba. It's so disheartening to watch them go through the reflux and the constipation just adds insult to injury x x

Thank you, I thought all of the meds would be pretty much the same. My lo is combi fed so her poo had been really watery until now.

I've given her lactulose now as she was so uncomfortable, water didn't work and I'm not sure she'd have prune juice (the lactulose was hidden in her milk) the poor things! Reflux is awful but constipation is great either! Xx

Really hope the lactulose works for your little one hon. For me and my oh it was hard to weigh up which was worse in the end.... The reflux or the constipation. Both had her in agony.
If you have a hv I'd really recommend asking about baby massage classes. The constipation/colic massage really helps their tummies and helps to relax them as well. I did a 5 week course. It was free, really good fun, met lots of other mummies and we use the massage all the time x x

We normally don't put gaviscon in one of her bottles and when she's really straining to go we give her a little bit of cooled boiled water and it normally gets things moving xx

The lactulose worked in the night!! I tried cooled boiled water but she spat it out, unless it's milk she won't have it! She even spits infacol out, I think that tastes lovely. We also gave her a gaviscon free feed yesterday but she just vomited the whole thing back up! I'm hoping it's not long before she grows out of this xx
