We were worried, because just like you our LO was early & small and then suddenly shot up the growth chart around 6 months. He was born 4-6 weeks early, was 5lb 11oz at birth (5lb 3oz when we got him home). At first his growth rate for height & weight pretty much followed the curve, just a bit ahead so he was slowly rising in the centiles, until he got close to six months. Doc said he should be levelling off but he was sharply increasing, and she wanted to see him back in a month. Near 7 months we saw her again, and she said he was FAT! To look at him he's not fat, he's big just like daddy. He was 18lb 12oz at his appointment, about 19lb now, but he's getting noticeably thinner - he gained weight, and now he's growing taller. Some kids grow that way - pounds, then inches, then pounds, then inches. Your LO may be doing the same; getting heavier before he gets taller.

You know, I'm convinced doctors only worry because they have these charts to refer to - when my hubby was a baby he grew like a weed (we have his numbers, he was WAY above the highest numbers on the charts for height, right at the top for weight) but nobody worried because they weren't busy plotting numbers on a graph.

17lb 15oz is only just over the 50th centile at 26 weeks???
I guess it must be quite different for a little girl?
At this age boys and girls don't seem that much differnt in size so I would try not to worry.
I know its hard as we have to make sure George's weight stays on the higher side of normal to help with his recovery from surgery. Until recently he had to be weighed every week and I'm still constantly looking at the charts!
The hv worked it out on her chart over the phone and said I had done it wrong, and Lylah is at the 75th centile not the 91st.
For some reason every week I get Lylah weighed they say she is a week ahead, so if she is 22 weeks, on the chart they put 23 etc. So thats what I did and I came out with 91. I think the lady over the phone did it to her true age. Its sooo flipping complicated.
Either way she is at least on the 75th centile or 91st from my weird calculations lol.
I feel better having spoke to her about it all.

Thomas weighed 6lb 11oz when he was born (so a little bit bigger).
At 6 months he weighed 16lb 15ozs

Looking at the girls chart in my red book, if a baby girl weighs 8kg at 6 months then they are on 75th centile. 8kg is about 17lbs ish I think, so I don't think there is a big problem?

The problem was her being on the 9th centile up til recently(4 months) when she jumped up to the 50th by 5 months then 75th (according to the hv i called)by 6, within a really small space of time.
If it had been a gradual thing I wouldnt have made this post, but it really did come from nowhere and I wanted to rule out any weight gaining problems, such as thyroid etc.... my MIL has it so I wanted to ensure that was not the case in my baby.

They make mistakes at my clinic too, I got a patronising lecture about feeding because Ruby's weight gain had apparently dropped off a bit. Then I realised they'd plotted her age at 15 weeks when she was 8 weeks, doh

(Shhh.....) no!. haha!

Nah I feed her nice things, cauliflower, brocolli, chicken, fruit etc.
She does have quite a bit of avacado which is quite a fattening fruit.

Toria thanks for posting that, between 4-7 months on Caitlyn it went up but has come back down again when she became active.
I guess I will just have to wait and see what happens. I am relieved that the hv is not worried.

Sovereign his weight is just right I would say.

thanks girls
xx
