Birth control question: Anyone have or had the implant in the arm?

After having so long off the pill, I think the last time I was on it was 2008(!), I now keep forgetting to take it which then causes breakthrough bleeding which is annoying. I'm sure I'll get used to taking it again but I was thinking about having the implant in my arm.

Have any of you had or have this? Do you have any unwanted side effects? I've read one can be constant spotting and heavier periods. I did try the injection a couple of times but I spotted the whole time using that so gave up after 6 months. I think I probably need to give these things longer but 6 months of constant spotting was annoying so I switched back. So would you recommend the implant? x

Hi I had the implant before TTC. Had it in for the full 3 years and then got it replaced straight away so 6 years in total! I loved it! Had no side effects at all, I didn't have a period for the entire 6 years which I LOVED! Lol! Got it removed when we wanted to conceive and I was pregnant within 7 months! Did have a miscarriage but conceived 2 months after that so fertility returned to nornal after having it removed (if you're wanting to have anymore!!). Few friends have it and they love it aswell!

I had it in January. So far I've bled twice, only light spotting and no cramps etc.

I've got it. I had light spotting the first 2 months but just get periods as normal now. No particular pattern though, anything between 4 and 6 weeks apart. A bit annoying not knowing when to expect it. My periods have been very heavy and painful since having rio. They were this way before I got the implant though x

Had it continuously for 8 years, had removed and was pregnant the next month! A little quicker than we were expecting but eternally grateful to find it had no effect on my fertility!
Had another one fitted 2 months post natal. I have always got along with them. Yes it does take your body a couple of months to settle down to the change in hormones but I would say it's worth it every time! My body tends to have lighter more frequent periods for a few months then they are still lighter but very irregular normally once every 3-4 months. But it is different for everyone. I would say go for it, for both both peace of mind and because it's just so easy not having to keep tabs on taking pills and lasts for at least 3 years without you even having to think about it!

I had it for 10 months back in 2010. It was horrendous. Instead of bleeding for 8 days a month, I bled for over 20 days a month.
After about 6 months the doctor put me on the pill for 3 months to regulate my periods. So for 6th, 7th and 8th month I was okay.
But then then 9th and 10th months, without the pill again, I was back to bleeding non stop.
So I got it removed. It was clearly not agreeing with my system.

Thanks everyone. The only thing that makes me reluctant is the fact that I had constant spotting on the injection but the nurse I spoke to yesterday while having my smear test said that I perhaps didn't give my body long enough to adjust to it. I think I had it twice. I may give it a go though. I can always have it removed if it doesn't agree with me x

I had it and bled lots so ended up taking the mini pill as well. It didn't agree with me. Also it made a right mess when it came out my arm. Got pregnant within 4 months of having it out though. Not planning on anymore children so thinking of the mirena coil for me now.
