Nasal congestion, under 3 months old

Adam's nose keeps getting blocked up. Not all the time, it seems to clear itself but then comes back. He's having trouble feeding, he's snuffling loudly, and when he tries to sleep his dummy drops out and that wakes him and he cries.

Is there anything I can do to help? He's not old enough for Karvol or any of the other stuff that might help, like Vicks - but he'll be 3 months old in 11 days. I have a snot sucker but there isn't any visible snot and I don't want to add insult to injury by sticking it in there if there's nothing to come out.

My LO has a cold and on the advice of the doctor i got a calpol saline nasal spray to squirt up his nose before a feed which has helped and also to put half a teaspoon of vicks in boiling water under his bed at night to help him sleep, since doing this he has slept better.

I got the same Calpol Saline spray when Freya was younger, it was better than the drops. Also, Vicks in a jug of boiling water is good, or Snufflebabe on the chest, I think it is from birth? Whatever he sleeps in keep it propped up at the head end, this helps a lot. You can get Karvol capsules and put them on a muslin to let him sniff - I think they are ok from birth. I don't know if you are breast or formula feeding but apparently BM up the nose is really good, I have never tried this though.

Thanks ladies. About the saline spray, does your LO allow it or do they kick up a fuss? I haven't tried putting anything in his nose (yet) but I suffered badly with congestion when I was pregnant and the only thing I dared use was a saline spray and I found it to be a horrible experience! Not sure whether to try this myself or wait till OH comes home...

About Vicks and Karvol, are they definitely ok before 3 months? We had this a few weeks ago as well (it cleared up by itself in the end) and I checked out everything I could see at Boots and it all said 3mo+

I am still breastfeeding a little, so I could try that as well.

My doctor said vicks is ok as long as you put it in boiling water and the put the bowl in the same room as baby he also told me to only use half a teaspoon in a cereal sized bowl but not on the skin until at least 6 months. My LO lets me put the spray up his nose and doesn't mind it at all its easier to do if their head is on its side resting against you.
