LO 4 weeks has not done a poo in 8 days - update she pood today after 10 long days

My LO who is breastfed has not done a poo since sunday last weekend, I have spoken to the HV last week who said it's normal, but today she referred me to see our GP. Did anyone else experience this with their LOs? Was there anything you could do to make them poo again? I am a bit concerned and was just wondering if anybody elses LO also went so long without doing a poo. My LO has been putting on weight fine and is now 2lbs heavier than her birthweight, she also doesn't really cry, so doesn't seem to be in any discomfort.

Is she breastfed? My LO went quite a few days without pooing and when I spoke to my HV she said breastfed babies can go days without pooing rather than bottle fed who could poo everyday. Hopefully something will happen soon. Try not to worry if you LO does not seem too botherd. Harder said than done tho x

Yes she is breastfed and last pood when she was 2 weeks and 6 days old... lol I can't believe I am sitting here worrying about my babies poo, how glamarous my life has become! Her farts have got really smelly the last 2 days so I thought she would poo soon, but I guess I will have to wait and see.

Hi there, well from week 2 my LO was constipated (she was BF then, now she is FF) and the HV said that I could give her approx 1oz of cooled boiled water which 'got things going' I now give her this every day/ every other day depending on consistency of poo because she gets constipated easily and will cry all day as It wont come out, works really well for us.
I know tell me about how glamorous it is these days all I talk her about is her wind and pooh and how much shes eating LOL xxx

I second giving cooled boiled water as this alway helped my son (although he never went as long as 8 days without pooping). Also I learnt some baby massage techniques which are great for constipated babies so maybe you could google it. It involves gently but firmly massaging around the belly button in a clock wise direction.

Thanks for the advice, I will try the water tomorrow, she is asleep now, also will see what the GP says, my Hv said not to give water she doesn't need it as she is breastfed. She doesn't seem to be in any discomfort at the moment, but I hope she goes soon!

Great that she is not in any discomfort - mine seems to suffer if he hasn't gone once in a day, but then it is different for a 7 month old I guess? Anyhoo, with regards to the water; I know they normally say a breastfed baby does need it as they get everything from your milk but in this case the water is not for thirst but more to provide extra fluid to get things moving.

There's really no need to give cool boiled water as this is very common with BF'd babies
Purely BF'd babies very very rarely get constipated there is very little waste with BM and your baby is literally just using every last little drop of it. My LO often goes on a poo-strike and we get nothing for days and days on end, she usually goes once a week or so and it's not the huge poo you'd think either, it's just an average one (yep, glamorous indeed!). She went from pooing 6 or 7 times a day to once a week, literally overnight. Some BF'd babies can go two weeks without pooing and that'd still be considered normal.

Guarantee you'll get a nappy-explosion any day now

Thanks everyone, Elski I would love a poo explosion! OMG did I just write that?

Just been doing some research on google (yes a bad idea!) and there is so much contradicting information on there, so I will see my GP tomorrow and then just wait I guess. She really doesn't cry unless she wants picking up but then she instantly stops when I do that so I don't think she is in discomfort!

Hi Linn,

Probably best to get advice from DR. I BF my LO only for a week now he is on Formula. But we also give him 30ml of water every 2nd day and it helps keep him regular, but I think this is more to do with the fact that he is FF. I have also read that BF babies can go quite a bit longer and are not really constipated. My Health visitor said that babies can go 10-12 days before considered constipated - which is scary, what would we be like if we had to wait that long!

Hopefully that big poo will come soon.

xxxxxxxx
