Weaning, milk routine and appetite - it's all going pearshaped! Long essay to read!

I've started weaning my LO again. I tried when he was 4 months old but it didn't go too well so I layed off for a while.

He's now 5 and a half months old, and I've started again with Cow&Gate Baby Rice. I followed weaning instructions of giving small amounts and increasing slowly so he gets used to it but...

here's the isssue:

He still moans and whinges when having his rice. He doesn't kick and scream but just puts across that he's not enjoying his time. If I put some in his mouth, he pushes all of it back out again with his tongue. Eventually I manage to get him to have some.

Also, if he has his rice, he fights, kicks and screams when having his milk. If he has his milk first, he fights and kicks and screams when having his rice.

Weaning guides say that I should give the usual milk feed first, and then the solids, but baby is too full to even want to try. I've tried waiting an hour but he still refuses and if I wait more than that, it's almost time for his milk feed again! If I give his rice late, he obviously doesn't want his milk.

I'm so confused and I can't seem to work this out.

Help!

Have you tried something other than the rice? Anna hated it and I tasted it and yuk! Maybe try some fruity porridge?

Also I was told to start weaning by offering solids midway through the bottle - you could give that a go?

If he is refusing the rice I wouldnt persist - just leave it, try something else, and you can try the rice in another few days.

Is it served warm? Anna gags on anything cold that I give her unless its a yoghurt!

I always leave a gap of 2 hrs between solids & feeds. If I give them close he will refuse to take one of them. With ellie 27 regarding baby rice. It's too bland. There r other options like fruity porridge which is suitable from 4 mnths & i guess it has more taste than plain baby rice. Omar didn't like baby rice even when we tried mixing it with fruits. xx

I tried my own home made fruity porridge once - apple and pear, but he just downright refused it. I can guaruntee he didnt swallow any of it! It went all on his bib.

I will try the midway thing - never done that before. The rice is made warm but because it takes so long for him to actually take in the food, it goes cold

Thanks for the tips hun

Sorry to sound daft but what about your routine? At the moment, my son has a 3 hourly routine of milk feeds. I am finding it so hard to maintain a good routine whilst adding solid meals too.

Myabe he's not ready yet. We started weaning at week 20 due to reflux but Omar was not ready, & we had to stop after few weeks. He was ready at 6.5 mnths. We started offering him from what we r eating fork mashed at 1st & he really liked it. At 7 mnths he was eating food without mashing.

Omar is not a big drinker. Since he was 3 mnths he was only taking 4 bottles in 24 hrs. 1 bottle every 4 hrs. When he was ready for solids at 6.5 mnths, I started introducing solids 1.5-2 hrs after his morning bottle at 1st. At 7 mnths he dropped 1 bottle & started to go for 3 bottles with 2 solids. At 8 mnths he went for 3 bottles & 3 meals with no snacks. & until now he only takes 3 bottles & 3 solids with 2 hrs gap between solids & feeds. xx

We are told that many different things!! But I suppose it gives a few options to try if its not working.

So, I was told if weaning early give solids midway feed, but if starting at 6 months then offer the food first as you say.

Whatever works for you is best and if LO is still taking plenty milk and having some solids then thats great

We started by offering milk 1st then solid when I started at week 20 as they'r not suppose to start dropping milk feeds before they'r fully weaned at 6+ mnths. At 6 mnths u can do what works for ur LO. Since Omar was 7 mnths he prefers taking his breakfast at 1st then a bottle after 2 hrs before his nap. Now we offer solids & 2 hrs later we offer him a bottle xx
