he polished off his first bowl of baby rice....what next??

today i decided to start my lo on solids at 5 months old. was so giddy,i couldnt wait, my mum told me he would prob only take a few mouthfuls........but no.......he finished the whole bowl and would have probably taken more if i would have let him!!! i gave him it with his half 12 bottle of 7oz

think tomo i will mash up a banana with the baby rice and see how that goes....then maybe the next day if he liked it just give banana on its own?? does that sound ok??
have been told to only try one food a week, to check for allergies and to allow the baby to get used to the flavours.....or do you reckon i could change it every 3 or 4 days?
also been told not to do too many sweet foods to start with, so might alternate each week with a different taste ie one week sweet the next, savoury

any other tips/ideas/advice for what to do next??

also do i just give him his bottles as normal? do i stick to the same amount? and do i keep to the same time every day to give him solids? when do i increase it to more than one meal?
sorry for all the questions!!
any help would be great!
x

My LO loved his first taste of baby rice also, and I wasnt long about introducing more tastes!

He loved
Pureed carrots
Sauteed then pureed apples and pears (That was a big favourite)
Sweet potato, with carrots, brocolli.
Butternut squash!
Mashed banana, was a big hit and still is!

I wouldnt drop a bottle, see how he goes for a few weeks first!

good luck , and enjoy this exciting time!!! xx

i make all ollies dinners myself. i spend 1 morning a month cooking for her, i make her different veg and fruit purees then freeze in ice cube trays. i do each fruit and veg seperately so i can mix and match different cubes so shes not stuck with the same combination. ollies likes carrot, sweet potato, brocolli, spinach, parsnip, potato, apple, banana, strawberry, peach, pear and blueberry so far x

eta... we still give olivia her bottles as normal as she still needs the calories from the milk. week 1 we started with breakfast, a week later we introduced dinner and 2 weeks after that we introduced tea and now on week 5/6 she has fruity porridge or baby musli for breakfast, 3 ice cubes of veg for dinner, 2 ice cubes of fruit or a third of a jar of pudding for tea and if she is unsettled and hungry in an evening we give her half a low sugar rusk for supper....she is a hungry baby though and as well as all that food she is still having between 27 ann 32oz of hungry baby milk a day lol x

Think I will watch this thread and see what advice you get so that I can copy when I start my LO on solids in a couple of months. Its worrying when you dont know how much to give and when, or what for that matter. But exciting! Good luck. x

thanks for that, i love the ideas of different ice cubes so you can mix the flavours! one morning a month isnt that bad, i take it you just cook the veg/fruit in water till soft, then drain and puree down?? do the ice cube trays need to be sterilised? how do you keep them labelled so you know what they are? sorry for all the silly questions!
thanks for all the help!!!

I never gave Jaxon rice alone, so I say if they are doing well with opening mouth in response to the spoon and wanting more, then go for it! Jaxon is very hit or miss with it. Some days he will eat all 3 tablespoons of his meal, and other days he doesn't want it. I don't force it since I nurse on demand and will just offer the boob instead.

Some tips I have read, and implemented about solids:

- Use oatmeal instead of rice cereal as it's less constipating and causes less gas
- carrots should never be thinned with their own water, as it's too high in Nitrates.
- bananas and avocados do not freeze well, use fresh if possible
- using formula or breastmilk to thin thicker purees is best

Hope that helps some!

thats right,i cook the veg in water until soft then puree(i save some of the water so if the puree needs to be thinner, i can add the cooking water rather than plain water) when its all been pureed, put in the trys and is cool, i put each tray in a food bag, seal it and write on the bag whats in it and when it was made
i dont have much freezer room so i freeze a few trays at aq time them transfer the food cubes to a different food bag(again i write on the bag what it is and when it was made)

i dont sterilise the ice cube trays, i just wash them. i figure if im not sterilising the bowls or spoons or blender lol then theres no real need to sterilise the ice cube trays.
