question about white noise

Isla usually needs the noise of the hairdryer to go to sleep. it calms her down really fast and within a few minutes she will be asleep. my question is: am I making her reliant on this to go to sleep? if she wakes in the night then after a feed she goes to sleep without it, but during the day and most evenings she needs it to go off to sleep, or else I spend all night rocking her to sleep, which I don't want to do anymore. has anyone else used white noise to put LO to sleep and do you 'wean' them off it at some point??

well we used it: we used the sound of rain on you tube. I wasn't really ever convinced about it but OH thought it really calmed her in the evening. We stopped a few weeks and I don't know why! Maybe we just forgot one night, dunno. Anyway she doesn't seem to need it to go to sleep. But she is sleeping for 7-8 hours at night now whereas then she was sleeping 5 hours max, so maybe it's just coincidence that she is just starting to sleep better anyway. Hmm, I've not been helpful have I?

I never actually relied on it but it definately helped Eva go off when she was downstairsin her moses and the washing machine was on.
Now she sleeps in her cot upstairs and I always used to haver to rock her but she doesnt seem to need it much anymore I just hug her and sit with her till she goes off and she even took herself off to sleep in her cot the other day as I put her down when she was still awake.
I think as they get older u will find u wotn need to rely on this anymore as soon as they start to realsie they are tired and need to sleep they will.
Eva used to be a nightmare to get off to sleep when she was first born and I thought she would just realise shes tired and sleep but it didnt work like that, I had to 'train' her to sleep and now I have got into a routine of not going past 2hrs between naps and she sleep brilliantly in day and night!

We live in a condo so there are people above us, and two levels beside us as well. We've always used white noise for our LO as it can get noisy here!

We have a lullaby CD that we play when she's going to sleep, and in the summer we run a fan. Winter we run an air purifier. I'm not that concerned about making her "reliant" on them. Its the only things she uses as a sleep aid, she's never taken a soother and doesn't have an emotional attachment to a toy or anything.

I use white noise but sometimes forget to turn it on and she sleeps just fine without it. We are making lots of noises in the evening so it's really just to tune out all noises more than help her fall asleep. You'd be surprised but I bet your LO will fall asleep fine without it. It's staying asleep through the loud noises is an issue but I don't use it during a day as she needs to know the difference.

you're probably right, I might give it a try without it some time. I also put a fan on at night - like you say it tunes out all the other noises.

We use a fan and it works well.

I aim it at the wall and fans are meant to be good at preventing SIDs too but not sure how? xx

Fans keep the air circulating and fresh so you get a better supply of oxygen and the level of carbon monoxide and other impurities stays lower which means fewer impurities get into your blood. Plus I think there's been some research on how the actual noise of the fan can prevent SIDS as it reminds baby to breathe.. or something along those lines, I can't remember exactly.

We've always had a fan in Maya's room (we also have one in our bedroom and Maya used to sleep with us) and it's mainly there to block out the noise of my husband snoring. She doesn't have a problem falling asleep without it though. However I do, I can't sleep without the fan at all.
