OK so those who've decided not to return to work...

What kind of income are you able to do this on? This includes your OH's take-home wage PLUS any child benefit/tax credit help you get.
I'm just interested to see if I am over-estimating what we need to get by if I don't return to work.

Hi
I'm currently considering my options in regards to this.
ATM hubby's take home is approx £900-£1000 every 2 weeks. I get MA, child ben and tax credits amounting to £700 a month.

I was made red when LO was 10 weeks old, and my MA runs out at the end of the year. We have been getting by on what we get now, so I think instead of going back to my 'regular job' (accountant) straight away, I am going to do bar work/ waitressing/ anything that may net me the £500 that we'll be short. This 'should' save me on child care as I can do that at weekends/ evenings when hubby can have her, or my mum will help out.

When I was pg OH was unemployed and we budgeted for my £16K a yr job + benefits to give us around 1300+ per month. But our expenses are low as we don't drive and live in a council flat.

I think it depends a lot on your expenditures and what can be 'cut out' if necessary. I did a budget based on my OH not going back to work to see if we could live on just my salary. I knew exactly how much we spent a month on bills (mortgage, utilities). I then looked at grocery costs and any CC payments, car payments we had. We could live on a lot less if we sold a vehicle, but we preferred to keep it. We got rid of the phone and got a prepaid cell, got rid of cable TV, etc. We have a 'fun' budget for going out on occasion as well.

our budget, about 2200 pounds, 2500 euro, seems ok but with the rent taking half of it. rents are still very expensive here and will probably go up as the government want to increase taxes on property and bring in water charges. we have about 100 euro left a month after everything is paid. sky tv and phone are going. even though i have worked for 20 yrs and paid tax i wont get any benefits.

Thanks everyone.
If I didn't work, our household income, including 135 a month child benefit and tax credits, would be about 1700 before his overtime and annual bonus (his boss is a nice type who gives them a little cash at xmas!). Overtime is quite regular generally.

Our mortgage is 575 a month (includes life insurance for him). We have one horse (used to have 2 so expenditure should have reduced since he was put to sleep, but it hasn't in reality) and he costs us roughly 200 a month. We each have a car, but if I didn't work we'd definitely just need the one car. Costs for that one car, including fuel, would be about 250 a month (MOT, Service, Tax etc). So that leaves 650ish for everything else like food, bills, medical (dentist/optician/prescriptions), savings, little treats...). I think it's a push.

Our rent is £750 a month (3 bed house in south), then necessary bills (including car tax and insurance but not petrol) etc amount to about £550, then food and fuel is about £450 a month.
Hubs salary varies a bit as depending on shifts etc, but usually have about £100 a month for extra expenses (presents etc) or 'fun' things/days out.
