Why do so many people start weaning much earlier than recommended?!

I mean muuuuch earlier weaning than recommended. I personally think that even 4 months is a bit too early for most babies but i know lots of people start doing it then so i guess its kind of accepted but i was at the sure start centre today and a woman with her 14 week old came to baby club and sat there feeding him his 'breakfast' (babyrice).
I know its none of my business but seriously, why are so many people so eager to give their LO's food this early?
It really bothers me that some people just dont take into consideration that they could be causing harm to their LO's by stuffing them with baby rice and purees at that age, arrrrrrrghghghghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
Sorry if this offends anyone but i dont understand why anyone else would do it when they know what the risks are!

I don't know why people are so eager either - I miss the days when LO was exclusively BF, As fun as it is seeing him experience new foods and all, it was so much easier lol.

People get over-excited and impatient. If they knew how much easier it is when all you have to think about is milk, they might think differently.

i feel the same... my experience of other mums is that a lot of them are in a rush for their baby to get to the next stage - eat solids, roll over, talk, crawl, roll, walk etc etc. I'm the opposite - i love it when LO reaches a milestone but it's a reminder that he's growing up and isn't my baby anymore and that's a tiny bit sad cos it means time's flying and before i know it he'll be all grown up!!

but i think this is what i've found - that my friends are just in a hurry for their babies to grow up and also people get very competitive and want their babies to be the first to do all those things including eat!!

i don't mean people who have very hungry babies and need to ween them early - i mean people whose babies are perfectly happy with just milk. lots of my friends said to me around 4/5 months 'she doesn't seem interested in eating' and i'd think 'well stop forcing her then and wait til she's ready!!'

early weaning is sometimes for medical reasons, so please consider this also. x

just out of interest, why are you planning to give your LO chocolate.

I only ask cos some of my friends give their LOs chocolate and i don't understand it - they don't know it's chocolate, it has no goodness in it, and they love other stuff that is good for them so much - my LO goes mad over anything - so why waste it on them - eat it all yourself

i also think that sometimes our parents can be to blaime to. My mum has tried to tell me to wean early as in there day it was the norm. I also think that we are not all advised enough as to the reasons to wait till 6 months. Then there the fact that there are baby food out there for 4 months. Really they should stop selling that so less people think its ok. Obviously this dont include medical reasons for weaning.Lastly the internet. The amount of time i have seen things like my baby has started waking again and then someone says they must be ready for food then.

I feel like im almost hypocritical for writing this thread cos i was recommended to start weaning at 4 months to help reflux, which i put off till LO was 5 months (it did actually work a treat once i started), but it has been such a hassle and i really have not enjoyed doing it.
I know what you mean about missing the days when it was just milk!
