Temp... when to worry?

Hi everyone

My LO is 5 months old & hasn't been ill up to now, plus she's my 1st so im unsure of what to do/when to see a doctor etc...

she hasnt been her usual self since yesterday - crying more than usual/felt hot to the touch but I didnt have a thermometer & had switched the fire on for the 1st time yesterday so just put it down to that at first iyswim?

she seems sleepier than normal & not as interested in BF (although she is feeding - I just think not as much as my boobs seem fuller) she seems really sorry for herself & isnt her normal smiley self at all

i've just taken her temp (externally) and its 37.81 degrees C

she also sounds like she is full of wind/has a blocked stuffy nose but its only really apparent when she lays down as you can hear it catching in the back of her nose/throat & no matter how much I try to get her to burp nothing has come up (including with infacol)

im confused coz although it sounds like wind I don't think it is coz she is asleep on my lap now & hasnt been squirming in discomfort or anything if that makes sense?

sorry for the confused rambling... im just wondering at what temp should I take her to the doctors please?

thanks for any responses xx

Sorry I can't help much, but they say you should take your LO to the doctor or a hospital when their temp reaches 40c, but I would personally seek advice if it reaches 39c; especially if they're not their usual self

My pediatrician says to call if its over 101 but I forgot if that was rectally or under the armpit.

Omar's temp was 39 oC 2 days back. We took him to the Dr. & he only gave us calpol every 4 hrs & advised us to use compresses but not cold ones (room temperature water). Yesterday he slept almost all day & he didnt eat or drink anything other than water. It usually takes 2 days for a fever to go down, just keep checking her temperature & give her sips of water if she's not feeding well. If she's having wet nappies & looks alert when she's awake, there is nothing to worry about hun. Hope she gets better soon xx

hiya a babies temp should be between 36.3 and 37.1. when jake has a temp i give him calpol then 40 mins afta check his temp if it hasnot gone down i give him nurofen 2hours after ive given the calpol, check again after 30- 40 mins if still raised i would ring the doc to see waht they say. try and keep your lo cool aswell.

p.s. nurofen is not suitable for babies umder 3 months. hth . xx

thanks girls her temp has gone up to 38.10 degrees C

i gave her calpol at 5pm & she puked it straight back up

she has had a feed & a little sleep & looks a bit brighter at the moment... she is just clingy but im happy she is looking more alert & isnt upset

ive got her stripped down to a vest/nappy & am just giving her lots of cuddles/singing to her which is cheering her up a bit so hopefully she is feeling a bit better

thanks to those of you that took the time to answer xx

Hiya, I always do what jodieX suggests. Alternate calpol and neurofen, it sounds like you are doing the right things. Armpit temp is 0.5 degrees C lower than core temp. I would take her to the docs if she has a temperature for more than 24 hours, just in case its related to an infection she could have antibiotics for. Trust your instincts, hope LO feels better soon xxx

I'd take her to the doctors if it is above 39 degrees or if it doesn't go down with calpol or nurofen - we've found that nurofen is much better at dropping temps than calpol. Make sure you encourage her to drink her milk still to keep her fluids up.

Tom had temps of 39 and 40 degrees last week when he had a nasty infection and had to have antibiotics.
