11month old suddenly won't self settle and gets stuck

My 11 month old (tomorrow) has turned from the worlds best self settler to a complete nightmare.

I used to be able to give him a bath, bottle and pop him into bed, he'd give me a cheesy grin and I'd walk out and he'd settle within a few minutes.

But not for the past week.

Max started crawling last Sunday, and slept fine that night. Monday night it started. Same routine as ever, only as soon as I walk out he starts screaming. I check on him and he's sat up, settle him back down and he just keeps sitting up every time I go to leave and therefore getting stuck as the only way to get him back down is for me to do it.

This continued each night and basically I've given into him and if I stay by his cot not talking to him or giving him eye contact (all in the dark) he falls asleep within minutes, sometimes as little as 30 seconds.

But if he wakes in the night he's now the same. Max normally wakes at around 4 or 5am and has bottle, settles for 10 minutes then starts screaming.

Last night for some reason he woke at midnight screaming and it took us until 1.30am to get him settled again.

A few nights ago he woke at 4am and I let him CIO. He did eventually give in but in the morning he had a bump next to his eye (so I presume he flung himself back down so he could lie down to sleep)

In the past I'dve done CIO, but the problem is not letting him CIO but the fact that he gets stuck and needs someone to physically help him back down.

I decided to persevere tonight with CIO but he got in such a state I gave in, and he fell asleep within 90 seconds of me going back in and just standing there.

I just don't know what to do. I am guessing it's because he learned to crawl. But I feel like I am making a rod for my own back and will have to do this every night and during the night if he wakes.

Please help!!!!!!!!!

(please no debate about CIO or not, I just want some advise from those who may have experienced something like this)

Hi hun, once he learns how to lie down he will get over it. We had lots of sleep crawling & sitting, then he started to stand up & he didnt know how to sit. Once your LO starts to master his new learned skill he will get back to his old routine. xx

I'm going through the exact same thing at the moment only it's been going on for about 4 weeks now and the lack of sleep is starting to get to me. I have no solution to this I'm just hoping it'll sort it's self out very soon. I did read that there is a developmental growth spurt at 9 ish months that can last a while, so maybe it is that....

Fingers crossed for you that it settles back down

That article has helped me understand. Max is also going through a nap transition from two to sometimes just one a day. As i presumed, the crying is related to his new found movement abilities.
I really hope your LO gets it sorted soon too

Nwmb I really hope it does settle down soon.

My worry is him hurting himself accidentally

Xx

Talia has dropped naps too, mostly she has 1 a day but sometimes 2. Although today she slept for 3 hours at lunchtime but she would only sleep on me, everytime I put her down she just sat up and started crying. It must be quite frustrating for them, as they dont really wanna be sitting up, or at least my LO doesn't, it seems like it is just a reflex.

I know what you mean about them getting hurt, I end up going in and she's facing the wrong end or laying across.

We had to move Omar to his travel cot with a proper matress at 10 months, as he also used to hurt himself. Until now he sleeps in the travel cot.

Max will sleep on his own for 40 minutes but if he sleeps on me he can go 2 hours sometimes. I wish he'd go longer than 40 mins by himself as I dont think 40 mins as just one nap a day is enough for him but I don't want him sleeping on me every day.

Don't they get themselves into some pickles in their cots??!!
