6 week old - Really goopy eye! :(

My 6 week old sons right eye is super goopy today, and very very slightly bloodshot... it's yellow goop, we keep cleaning it but it keeps coming back.

Any idea of what it could be? I'm going to call the midwife in the morning...

This happened with Thomas and my midwife gave me a sterile swab to get a sample and have it tested. It cleared up by itself and she never did tell me the result of the test.

Hopefully your midwife can help you out. It may be conjunctivitus or something similar.

If you are breastfeeding you can squirt some breast milk on the eye, it will help it clear up.

babies are born with closed ducts, they open normally within the first 6 months, sometimes as late as 12 months.

i wouldnt worry about it. some doctors will suggest surgery but its not really necessary unless theres an infection or something that anti-biotics arent helping with.

here we're talking about this in another thread:

My midwife advised me to keep excess breastmilk in the freezer because of the exact problem pepsiChic explained!! She said it's really common for small babies to have gunky eyes.

If you wipe it away and it's coming back within an hour or two it's likely a bacterial infection and may need antibiotic treatment. If it's just showing up after naps or is slow to appear then some breastmilk will probably help it or something could be in the eye irritating it.

blocked tear duct. All three of my kids had it. Green, thick and disgusting. Makena had it so bad, we had to see an opthamologist about surgery, but then he did something to her eye when I wasn't looking, and it made her scream. Worked though. This was after her having it for about 6 months. Kelana had hers forever it felt like, but then it just went...maybe 4 months. Just keep it clean with cotton balls and cooled boiled water. It's a pain, and it's gross.

This used to happen a lot to my LO when he was newborn. My mom told me to squirt breast milk on his eye and it worked. It never happened again

It may be conjunctivitis. My LO had conjunctivitis when she was a few weeks old. Her eye became gunky every few hours and would need wiping often. I took her to GP and he said wipe her eye with cooled boiled water on cotton pad and also gave me some eye drops to use if the cooled boiled water didn't help. It went away fairly quickly.

xx

My little boy has got exactly the same, he's had two swabs took but they came back clear of what i don't know the doctor didn't say, probably conjuctivitus and he's now on his second lot of antibiotics to be given 4 times a day. These don't seem to be working either, i'm forever having to wipe his eye. I went to get him weighed today and mentioned it to someone there, they advised me to massage his tear duct or just gently press down on it to open n get all the gunk out. My partner tried it earlier and some did come out but i'm going to try it again in a bit and hopefully that'll reduce the amount that comes out when he cries. The lady said it's very common, it's not nice though sometimes it runs into his eye and it goes all yellow. I'll let you know if this works hun x
