cereal in bottle?

Just curious here...

My step sister lives in FL and her son is 3 weeks old. All of her friends have told her to put cereal in his bottle since he's only sleeping 3 hour stretches.

I find this very odd and wondering if it's a regional thing maybe.

I think a 3 hour stretch is pretty good for a 3 week old. I feel like she's trying to rush things for her sake (i.e. sleep).

My son is 3 years old and we tried cereal in the bottle but not until 6 months old and he had bad reflux.

Just curious... do you do it and if so, how old is your son/daughter?

It is a common recommendation by the older generation here in the US. I do not agree with it at all. First, it's been proven it doesn't make them sleep any longer. Second, it can cause a baby to overeat because with the cereal they are still taking in the same amount of fluid but a lot more calories and substance...they don't realize how much they took in until that starts to settle in their belly. Third, babies shouldn't have any solids (including cereal, even in the bottle) until at least 4mo, 6mo is best though....unless there is a medical reason, though personally I would try everything before resorting to cereal with a young baby.

3hrs is very good for a 3wk old, you don't want to push them sleeping through the night earlier than their body is ready to anyway, they need those frequent feeds.

No, putting anything in a bottle other than milk is dangerous and not recommended, esp solids like cereal or rusk.
Its a choking hazard!

Also 3 hours is very good for such a tiny baby.

I'd never do it as its a choking risk

Giving a baby cereal just to get more sleep is very sefish and giving it at 3 weeks is just plain stupid

Nope! Never did it and never would. Its dangerous. Plus they cant digest it properly at 3 weeks!

3hrs is a good stretch of sleep at that stage.

Oh i totally agree and even told her that. But she's young (19) and unfortunately listens to others without doing any research herself. I specifically asked her if she heard about doing this from older people and she said no- from her friends.

My son had bad reflux and only until he was 6 months did our ped recommend trying it. We did and it bound him up and caused more problems, so we quickly stopped that.

And yes to the above poster, it is extremely SELFISH in my opinion.

I live in the US where its seems to be more exceptable but I do not agree with it at all.
I recently had a aquaintance on facebook that started this with her three week old. I was the only person to tell her that it was probably a bad idea and that she should speak to the doctor first. I got told off and gang up on because apparently everyone else thought that was an exceptable age.

You are right on spot!! 3 hours is pretty good for a 3 week old baby. As baby tummy is really small, he can take only so much and will be awake in the same amount of time to be fed again.

May be you can ask her to talk with a health practitioner like a nurse or a pediatrician.

Would she listen to her babies doctor? I don't know any doctor that would recommend cereal that young.
