All formula tastes pretty awful Pepti smells nice though, like Horlicks. I won't even give Holly soya based food alternatives, there's a lot of controversy about whether or not soya is safe. As Tor said, summer rain knows loads about it, hopefully she'll see this thread.

Oops, meant to say pepti is a hydrolysed formula rather than elemental. The proteins in it have been broken down to make them more easily digested. Elemental formula is made from amino acids (hence the AA in Nutramigen AA) all LOs should be able to tolerate it. However, it's disgusting so some Los won't drink it.

Thank you. Like I say I just feel so confused and dont know what to do for the best.
She took 2 bottles of the SMA SOYA when we got back from hospital but only took 1.5oz at her bedtime feed and fussed - so not sure if it was the soya or the fact that she has this bug ( as she has been taking less feeds since the bug, which they said is normal ?

We are so unsure if it is the milk as last week where she was going through a growth spurt she was taking 8-9 oz bottles - only for a day or 2 but she seemed to be happy taking them hence why we have waited so long to try milk change.

I will ask for the aptamil pepti I think as she seemed to take the apatmil comfort quite well generally up until this ' bug ' which has turned her poos green and frequent since last friday and has made feeding fussy

x

http://www.babycentre.co.uk/baby/formula/soyaexpert/. Here's a link which explains the soya issue for under 6 month old babies. Government guidelines released quite a few years ago now advise against unless it is needed as a very last resort like sapphire said. My Lo was on pepti previously and gulped it down compared to his milk now which tastes gross. Worth suggesting that to your doc x

Thank you - I will give them a call tomorrow I think to see if we can get a prescription for it. I was going to try her again with the SOYA tomorrow but after you lovely ladies giving me this advice I wont be ! I may have to tell a white lie and not actually tell him the real reason, ie I have researched that it is not ideal for babies under 6m ! and just say that she is not taking to it - as I dont want to wait weeks down the line to find that she is intolerant to this and obviously from what the guidelines say - last resort etc

Right - I have spoken to the aptamil helpline and they have kind of reassured me.

Hard to explain but I dont know if anyone has ever spoken to aptamil helpline or any other manufacture helpline but they are fantastic and really knowledgeable.
The lady I spoke to said it isnt normally the 1st option professionals recommend as there are others out there. She explained the research they carried out on rats which was a very very high dose of soya which came back that the rats had infertility.
However the lady also said, this was an extremely high dose and explained the results were inconclusive and the pead was correct in the advice he has given us.
I also forgot to mention that the paed and the lady from the helpline said we only had to use this milk for 2 weeks, as this will show us if it is the milk or the bug
Saying that, she had also confirmed that she may also develop a intolerance to the soya which is another reason why soya is not given as a first option !
Arggh so confusing...although she has confirmed we wont do any harm giving this to summer but then why should we do this considering all the research about it and also
if it is only for 2 weeks what happens after that ?!

I highly doubt that giving it to LO for 2 weeks will do harm, it's more of a long term thing. If using it does confirm that the milk is a problem, you could ask to switch to a pepti formula at that point. x x

Yeah that's a good idea. Just hope she ups her feeds soon as she is still off them a bit then we can see if it is the milk

The SMS soya is free from lactose and cows milk so he said this will be good for her system to have a break from it

Fingers crossed

if it helps! i recently had issues with my LO (we were trying to find a formula in the UK she can use - she was on a different one in South Africa that they dont sell here) and we discovered it was omega 3 and 6 that was causing the issues. whether it came from plants or fish.
the only formula we could find in boots that didnt have omega 3 and 6 was the SMA lactose free (LO doesnt have lactose intolerance since the formula she was on before contained lactose and she was fine on it) and it made a MASSIVE difference.

i know its rare to have an allergy/intolerance to the omegas, but it could be possible!
just...as another option in case the 1 you're trying now doesnt work.

good luck

Lactose-free isn't recommended for babies unless they have an intolerance to it as lactose is quite important for brain development. Even SMA made lactose free specifically for babies with lactose intolerance, either inborn, or temporary due to an illness-it isn't recommended for general use.

http://www.smanutrition.co.uk/sma-pr...&accepted=true

The holle organic formula brand contains NO omega 3 or 6 or any other additional fatty acids/fish oils, but has lactose and only costs about £1 more for the same size package as the SMA LF if you're worried about cost xx
