How to unswaddle?

I need some tips. My LO I think is beginning to get annoyed with the swaddle but when I take her out of it to sleep she thrashes her arms around and then wakes herself up and gets upset. How can I transition her out of it? Or is it something that needs to be done cold turkey and neither of us will get much sleep for a few nights? How long does it usually take them to get used to not being swaddled? How old was yours when stopped?

My new years resolution is to unswaddle...lol
I tried last night and she just screamed and rolled around for 30 mins until I swaddled her again, eeek.

I'm just going to go cold turkey. Isla really doesn't like being swaddled now, but she just doesn't know what to do when she isn't. She just rolls and crawls all over the cot!

swaddle with 1 arm out. if she does ok, she doesnt need swaddle anymore, if not keep swaddling a few more weeks and then try swaddling with 1 arm out again

My LO is still swaddled in the daytime for naps at 8 months old. I tried numerous time to get rid of it but he just want ready. It's only since he was nearly 7 months that I got rid of it at night!
I found one arm out then slowly weaning off didn't work for me. Cold turkey didn't work for me the first few times either lol I just kept giving in after getting no sleep at all.
In the end I have to cuddle him to sleep now then put him in his cot when hes fallen asleep and he's fine after that but he definitely wasn't ready before that.

My lo is 9 months this week and we are on day 3 of cold turkey. He used to be swaddled for both naps and night time and pretty much slept from 8pm to 6am but was starting to resist being swaddled.

Day 1 for naps was absolutely fine - though he does have 3 naps of only a half hour each. Night 1 was horrendous . LO woke every half hour and it was only at 4am and in need of sleep that we swaddled him - he slept til 9!

Night 2 - last night - was a little better. He woke 4 times between 12.30am and 6am before having a feed and then swaddled for a two hour sleep.

Am keeping everything crossed that tonight is easier again as I'm shattered!

My lo had the moro reflex for quite a while - certainly well past two months. He did resist the swaddle at first but it is only the past week where he has really started to thrash about when first swaddled that we thought it was time to lose it.

We got rid of swaddle week before Christmas and just went cold turkey... Lo was fussing and hard to settle one night so I took off swaddle to bring him down and as I released his arms he calmed down so I left him like that and he slept all night! he still wakes once most nights for milk but he has slept fine since losing swaddle. We don't use it in day now either...

Eek i could have written this myself a wee while ago!!! Danny gets seriously annoyed when i wrap him now but still needs it for the start of the night......
We've managed to transition from swaddled completely, to sleeping bag and swaddle just around the arms. Now he only needs it for naps, and for first getting off to sleep at night, once he's sleeping he only semi-wakes for feeds and i dont bother swaddling him again after he's been fed as he's usually so sleepy he doesnt seem to need it......might be worth a try if you have sleeping bags? I still can't get rid of the swaddle completely, have tried a few times but he's very restless, hits himself in the face and wakes himself up before getting into a deep sleep :S

My LO still likes the swaddle. She will sleep hours with it, but wakes frequently without.

Like a PP we went from swaddling to sleeping bags at 10weeks, which seems a happy balance x x

Thanks everyone. Yes she is in a sleeping bag type swaddle we use HALO. And have for about a month now. But it just seems she wants those arms free but when I try unswaddling she keeps waking herself up then none of us get sleep. I tried last night doing the one arm bit but she wasn't having it. My fear is that she is going to get so used to being swaddled that she will be in it for months and months. I am going to try again tonight and see what happens. She never needs it for naps during the day, but I think that has a lot to do with she sleeps mostly on us.
