LO puts everything in his mouth... except food!

Anyone else's LO do this? My LO REFUSES to hold things that actually belong in his mouth. If you give him anything else (a toy, clothing, etc), he brings it straight to his mouth... but when it's something actually edible, he refuses to close his hand around it and tries to eat it from your hand (or spoon).

We want to try giving him the baby rusks or bread or something to hold onto, but he refuses! We tried giving him a piece of pancake and he squished it in his fingers then dropped it on the floor. But when we hold it out to him he'll lunge for it with his mouth (see pic below!) but still won't hold it...

Any suggestions on how to get him to hold food/try feeding himself? I'm afraid to feed him bigger pieces of anything because I don't want him to swallow it... but I don't know how to help him learn to suck on things (like rusks, bread, etc) if he won't hold it.

Anyone else's LO do this?

Don't worry about choking! We're BLW and Alex learned in a week to move things forward in his mouth with his tongue if it was too big. Babies gag reflex is farther forward in their mouths than adults so they will gag, but they aren't choking Try bigger finger foods and things he can grasp with his hands: toast, pancakes, boiled carrots, whole bananas. He'll be fine!

Oh also, Alex has just started really actively eating with his hands. Give it time

Thanks He's really enthusiastic about eating, he just doesn't want to do it himself! I'm not sure how to encourage him to pick up his own and bring that to his mouth... but I guess I'll give it some more time to see if he starts on his own
