5 month old getting kidney reflux surgery

my daughter is 5 months old and at 3 months old she had her first UTI. She has had 2 since. She was diagnosed with stage 5 kidney reflux. With this latest breakthrough they have decided to do surgery. Anyone familiar with any of this?

My daughter has kidney reflux but hasn't needed surgery, but from what I've heard and read the surgery is very successful. I wish you and your little girl all the best, good luck with the surgery Will you keep us updated?

Surgery x 2 - no success so far.

Hi,

My son (now 21 months old) has grade 5 (unilateral) relux (diagnosed at 8 weeks old). Having had a nasty UTI at age 1, he then went on to have a daycase operation - 'STING' procedure, which is quite simply where a collagen-style liquid is injected via a catheter to try and decrease the widening of the ureters. As suspected by his pediatrician the first attempt failed (only holds a 50/50 success anyway with grade 4/5), so he had a repeat in October 2008. We have just today been for a repeat scan to guage the success of operation no.2 - VERY sad to find out that it didn't work either

We were so hoping that this would be the end of our worries, but are now concerned that he will face the more serious 'reimplantation' surgery which also carries risks and varying success rates with grade 5.

I would dearly love to offer you hope, but so far, our son has been thru SO much and as we feel - for what? We are back where we started over 18 months ago.

Our pediatrician was insdistant on trying the 2 attempts at the STING - great as less invasive/risky, however for the sake of such a slim chance of success, versus so much anesthetic, what has been achieved?

Find out as much as you can before anything is performed - success rates, side effects, risks, best practice procedures - don't just be fobbed off.

BEST OF LUCK to you and your precious little girl.

Lynseylou xx

Erin has just been diagnosed with her first UTI. She is on a course of antibiotics. She has been really poorly for a week now - severely vomiting with all solids and milk, not interested in feeding, extremely tired all the time. I hope it clears up ok. Not heard of kidney reflux before. xx

PLEASE keep an eye of Erin - my son was diagosed as young as her, and had it not been for the fact he was in hospital having surgery for another problem, we would have never had a diagnosis so quick.

Reflux is diagnosed in a significant percentage of cases (especially bad UTI's) and it is more common in girls than boys.

Please make sure this is followed up properly

Lynseylou xx

Take a look at Wikipedia under 'vesicoureteric reflux' - apparently up to 70% of UTI cases under 1 year of age turn out to be due to kidney reflux

Aww babe....good luck.

It's such a serious condition and people think of it as nothing more that repetative uti's but my friend lost her little boy through this. Poor Joseph eas only a few weeks old and died because a scan wasn't arranged sooner because of a Dr's incompetence
