How many poops?

My 2.5 month old is pooping only once every three or four days, and many times with the help of a suppository. I´m breastfeeding and the poop looks normal.

Is this normal? Pooping only once every 3-4 days? What about your babies?

Isabel xx

I think breastfed babies are well known for this as breast milk doesnt create alot of waste

As far as im aware its only an issue if they got 10+ days

Anything between once every 4 days to 4 times in one day! She's breast milk fed, but when she hasn't been for a couple of days I do tummy massage for her and it works 90% of the time and we get a poo at the next feed.

LO has never been regular, he went once a day for first 3 days, then maybe every 3-4 days and he really struggled to go. They put it down to breastfeeding at first but he's on formula now and isn't much better, maybe every other day, he still struggles and has a lot of discomfort. They don't want to give him anything till he's older though if it carries on as apparently this can make the Bowel lazy? X

There is no need to give suppositries, it is totally normal for BF babies to go up to 10+ days without pooing, using suppositries and laxatives too often can cause them to not be able to empty their bowels without these things being used. Unfortunately a lot of doctors and other health professionals do not know it is normal for a BF baby to skip several days between bowel movements and so they see it as something abnormal that needs to be 'fixed', when it does not xx

That´s right. My baby´s doctor was alarmed as he has not pooed in a couple of days. She gave me suppositories and laxatives! I´m not using the laxative. Didn´t she know it´s normal not to poo for a few days? What kind of doctor is that? Thanks to this forum and www.babycenter.com I can learn a lot.

One of the midwives when I had my youngest was like that also; saying if they do not poo for 3-4 days you need to go and buy suppositories for them, its just a lack of education, most doctors (and sadly even most midwives and child health nurses) lack decent training to do with breastfeeding and normal 'behaviour' for a BF baby. Dr Sears (a famous paediatrician in the US) even had baby patients who went 30+ days without pooing, all was fine and since they were not uncomfortable he just let nature take its course. My eldest went 21 days on one occasion and 18 days on another, again he was completely fine its just breastmilk does create little waste xx

My LO is ebf and she still poops 4 times a day or so, but I've noticed it has changed the last couple of weeks and she seems to poop all 4 times within the first 5 or 6 hours after getting up, and then no more poop until the next morning. It's nice because she used to poop 10 times a day!

Wow, 20 days no pooping seems quite a lot! And I was worried four days-no poop. I am more relaxed now.
