no reply in ff so asking here..new to formula!!

Finally Got the better of me and gave in! I think i am doing ok....Is it ok to make up the water the day before? This evening i have boiled up the kettle, l;et it cool for about 20 mins although still very hot, and filled up bottles, they are now in the fridge and add the powder when I need a feed. is this ok to do?

How many feeds does your 6 month old have?

How much?

we have also started weaning a little while ago so sophie has 3 tiny meals a day, porridge for breakfast after her feed, fruit/veg puree at lunch and same for dinner.

It's all so scary!!!!!!!!!!
oh and also..if she wake sin the night for a feed, would you wind them or just put them straight back down if you dream feed?x

Hiya

I think your supposed to add the power to water that's been off the boil for 20 mins, for is that's not realistic so we make up fresh boiled water every 24 hours.

At 6 months Rella was having 4 x 6oz bottles a day and 3 small
Meals. Now at nearly 8 months she has 3x 6oz and 1x 4oz and 3 bigger meals :-)

You need to add the powder when the water is still hot as the powders not sterile so it needs to be added to just boiled water to kill any bacteria in the powder. I know a lot of people do it the other way but the guidelines are to add to boiled water. If you google WHO guidelines for formula feeding you should be able to find it.

As above - the powder's not sterile so you should always add it to hot water that's been boiled and cooled for no more than 30 mins.

we used to make a max of 4 bottles up at a time with hot water and then cool them fast in iced water and stored them in the fridge. Then we'd get them out and reheat as needed making sure they weren't made up more than 12 hours in advance.

I know this isn't strictly the guidelines but we never had a problem.

They say on the tin that the powder is not sterile but it will be made in factory conditions that will be so so clean and strict about everything being sterile that the way your making them is fine and is recommended by the World Health Organisation (the WHO as mentioned above). I was told this by a health visitor too!
