when to start weaning?

Lo is almost 20 weeks, when should I start introduce her to solids? i want to do TW. I've been told if I wait til 6 months then lo will have problems learning to chew and with calcium deficiancy.

Is 5 months okay?

Thanks x

i weaned bella at 6 months (which is as per WHO guidelines). we started straight on finger foods rather than purees / mashed foods, doing BLW. she's never had any problems with chewing, or, as far as i know, calcium deficiency. not sure who's advised you of this.
xx

What?? Who told you that?? Sounds like nonsense to me!!

Current uk guidelines are 6 months - at 6 months they can then have anything as their bodies can cope - but not before.

It's one of those annoying things when u get told "it's best to start at 6 months and no earlier"......."however if u start later than 6months they have difficulty learning to chew and their iron levels get too low".its 17wks earliest hun but best to wait till 6months if ur baby is not showing all the signs of being ready, all babies reach the "ready" stage at different rates do just go by ur babies signs xx

We tw at 17wks for reflux and although she was showing most signs she wasn't ready and weaning made her wake loads in the night and have a slight upset tummy so we stopped and started again at 25wks and all went perfect xx

Hi

My hv wanted me to start at 17 weeks. She said if I leave it till 6 months then lo will prob have problems with tastes and textures etc etc!

Anyways, I didnt feel my lo was ready. I started with purées at 21 weeks when she could sit unaided and she even spoon fed herself its soooo messy! But fun

Yes, its still 6 months. If however your LO grabs a chip off your plate, puts it in his mouth, chews, swallows and eats it all with no problem then folk would say he is perhaps ready

Thank you, so potentially around 5 months sounds okay. When I give her mdicine for a cough etc she thrusts her tounge at the spoon which makes me think she's not ready yet, plus she doesn't really take notice of what we're eating, although she can sit unaided, hold her head fine and puts everything in her mouth. she's gaining weight well but does wake for feeds a fair bit at night.

Start your LO when she is ready whether she is 4 months 5 months or 6 months. She will let you know when its time to start. I started my LO on purees only 2 days ago and she was very ready.

Can I ask, how did you know she was "ready" as such? I'm woried she may be ready but I'm missing her cues.
