Started solids...nappy issues!

My lo was exclusively bf for the first 6 months. Her poo was always pretty runny and there was no problem when she 'went'!

Since starting solids she has had such trouble with constipation. She strains for 20-30 mins at a time and is bright red, often screaming. She has only really had veg so far, cauliflower cheese a couple of times. No bananas or avocado, I read that they make constipation worse. She drinks small amounts of water, most goes down her front. Still getting 4/5 bf in 24 hrs so I think she should be well hydrated.

We're up to 3 meals a ay. I moved quite fast because I felt she was ready having waited till 6 months. I've given her pureed prunes tonight with carrot, hopefully that will make things easier for her.

Does anyone have any experience of this starting solids? Should I cut back on solids? Any advice, I wish I could help her get them out, sorry, tmi! Thanks!

we started holding LO over a potty to poop at 6 months and the deep squat position I think helps her get the solid poops out - have you tried holding her that way even in a diaper if you prefer?
also, I found that pears give LO loose stool so when she starts getting constipated I give her pears and it softens them up.
that's all I've got really. good luck.

I have some pear puree in the freezer, might try that tomorrow with her breakfast. I was full of good intentions to avoid anything sweet until she was good at veg but I think I'll have to give in. Positioning her might work, she'll wonder what I'm up to, lol! Thanks for the tips.

The portions are getting smaller because she keeps getting distracted by straining! Hopefully once her guts learn to deal with solids it will be better, it's nice to hear that it sorted itself out, fingers crossed. I'll persevere with the water. Thanks.

I read some recent research that shows there is no need to wait with fruit, in fact giving sweet fruit after a not sweet veggie can actually make LO like the veggie better as they associate with satiation.

We're under the care of a paediatric dietitian for LO's CMPI and she said that this is totally normal when you start weaning as baby's gut gets used to digesting solid food. She suggested squeezing an orange to give her the fresh juice, and pear purée, and adding water to her food x

My little boy had terrible constipation and we used to give a little prune juice mixed with warm water every day and it was amazing! Doesn't have it at all now as he seems to have sorted his poo situation!
I know it's horrible to see them in such pain. We also gave a tiny bit of calpol/ibuprofen when it was really bad.

At 8.30 I give her porridge, 12.30/1 she gets veg puree and at 5/5.30 she gets either more veg or an anabel karmel concoction, so far we've had lentils, salmon or cauliflower cheese.

Homemade apple juice would work well in her porridge, might just try that everyday. Thanks
