Don't agree with the whole 'I've got a big baby' thing either. Both my children were big.

Archie was 9lb 1 at birth and Ellie was 9lb 8.
Oh I agree with you, this is a big misconception that bigger babies need to wean sooner.

When to wean is your decision as a parent. I know the guidelines say 6 months, but that's not right for every baby. I weaned at 6 months and am allergic to everything and have digestive issues, so that definitely didn't help me. My sister was weaned at 4 months and is perfect. So, it really does depend on the baby. I'd go with doctor's advice or even a nurse you trust (NOT a HV or anything like that), too.

As for me, my baby started weaning at 11 weeks old because he was losing so much weight with his reflux. I'm SLOWLY weaning him, but I notice he does much better on food than he does with milk. He's still not gaining weight, but at least now he's not losing. I definitely agree with some of the above posts, though... Feeding food is a LOT harder than bottles/breast. It takes forever, it's a huge mess, and although it's fun at first, it gets old, fast.

Ive just been to see my HV and she said the longer you can wait til 26 weeks the better. And i asked if it was good to leave it longer and she said no at 26 weeks, "well 24 to 26 weeks" you've really got to get on with it. So it doesn't give you much leaway!! My LO would take food now but she's not that bothered so i'm trying to leave her as long as poss til 26 weeks. If she was bothered i'd be feeding her now!!

And lots of babys (including mine!) aren't sitting unaided til a lot older so it's just being able to sit up in a bumbo or a highchair without flopping i reckon...

We started weaning my lo at 4 months for medical reasons (reflux & cmpi) and are under the care of a paediatrician and dietician. My lo has 8oz every 2-3 hours (approx 6 bottles a day) and she has puree fruit for breakfast and puree veg for lunch OR dinner. Weight wise she is small and still has some catching up to do. Since we have been weaning we have been able to take her off her ranitidine for her reflux which is fantastic but weaning is hard work and also I dont find it helps with the sleep issue. Past week my lo has been a nightmare (more so past 4 days) to settle. I think do what you think is best but deffo try to wait as long as possible but when you do start I would say not to overload lo system as I know some who do. With my lo I was only giving her some puree even though she could of ate more cause she is greedy I just didnt want to give her system too much work all at once. Lol.

xx

The guidelines in place are purely that guidelines. This is because Hv and health professionals have to give advice to cover every child. This does not mean you are wrong to do it before or after six months. When my older two children were born it was advised to wean 4 months. My dd was 20 weeks my son was 14 weeks. Neither of them have any allergies or problem with food. They both eat a wide variety an were both eating the same meals as us by 9 months old. Your instincts as a mum will tell you when you lo is ready, and as long as your not feeding lo McDonald's at 4 months, a bit of purée veg will do no harm IMO. They will soon let you know if they are not happy.
