Combining purees and finger foods at 6 months....

Hey all,

Despite reading a million books i'm still soo confused about weaning!!
I'm hoping we'll make it to 6 months cos so far she's not that bothered and i'd like to start with purees and finger foods.

So if you're following a puree meal plan (ie start with just lunch, then introduce other meals, fruit for pudding etc) when would you give finger foods like steamed veg sticks, lumps of fruit etc?? As snacks or as part of the main meals??

Thanks ladies xx

I have been combining both also, She has porridge/weetabix for bfast, after i will give her a slice of my toast to try, For tea she will have mashed?puree'd food but with our tea she will have chunks of veg/pasta etc to try, She won't eat much of the finger food, most of it goes on the floor! i think it's a good way of getting her to eat still and practice/learn finger foods, only been giving finger foods for a couple of weeks and already she is understanding it a lot more x

My LO was weaned early he is now 23 weeks and he has purees for lunch and dinner but I've started giving him toast crusts and hipp do biscuits that are rectangular shape he can grab onto again he doesn't eat much most ends up on the floor but it's really helping his hand to mouth co ordination!!

I would like to know this also. Atm lo has been weaning since 4 months and she has puree and is doing well with it. She has a fruit or baby porridge for breakfast and then for lunch or dinner she will have veggies. I have also started giving her mashed banana with her milk in it which she loves. Yesterday I tried giving her some mashed potato and mashed carrot mixed with vitalite and her nutramigen aa milk but she either choked on the tiny lumps even though I tried to mush them all out or she would spit out the lumps

She has gummed on cucumber and apple sticks before and quite liked them but that is about it.

xx

Sorry to hijack the post but my lo is 23 weeks also and yesterday I tried giving her mashed carrot and potato rather than pureed but she either choked on the lumps or spat them out! How do we go about weaning onto texture, do they tend to do the choking thing?!!

xx

Yea I think they do! My LO has done it a couple of times but even just after a week he is getting better! I've found things that kind of melt in the mouth are better that's why the biscuits seem to work and toast crusts. I watched him this morning and can see he was kind of sucking the toast but swishing it around his mouth iykwim?!

Soph chokes on lumps sometimes, she will sort of gag and then cough it up. petrified me at first but now I know she can move it. She does it with her finger foods too x

I've done things slightly different with Leo... We started off wanting to do BLW (finger foods, no puree) so at 22/23 weeks we introduced cucumber, broccoli, carrots, apple and banana for lunch then after a week he would have toast fingers/porridge fingers for breakfast and then a week later we started giving him whatever we were having for tea.

Then about 6 weeks ago (after 5 week of weaning) we decided to do some spoon feeding aswell. Mainly because Leo has a hand difference and we had noticed that he was really struggling to hold the foods properly. His right hand is affected and we think he is right handed so it was a real effort for him and he started to get really frustrated when he couldnt hold what he wanted to eat properly! Especially the porridge fingers as he looooves porridge!

So now he has porridge/muesli/cheerios/cornflakes/weetabix for breakfast followed by a couple of little orange segments as he finds them easy to hold. We try and encourage him with a pre loaded spoon as much as possible but I still help out when needed! Lunch tends to be mashed veg and mash potatoe followed by mashed pear&apple then he has rice cakes as snacks as he can hold these.. and lastly we now mash whatever we have for tea and again encourage pre loaded spoon feeding.

Leo is doing absolutely brilliantly now and will eat anything given to him! He's getting better with finger foods aswell, now that his hands are getting bigger he's finding it easier to figure out to hold it best!

Just go with the flow and do what you think is right for your little one! Nothing is wrong and when they get to 6 months they can eat anything you are aslong as there is no family history of allergies to a particular food! Most importantly.. have fun! And remember food is for fun until they turn one! xxx
