I think you assume the only reason a baby wakes in the night is because they're hungry when in fact there will be umpteen factors in play.
This. Louis doesn't have any feeds now in the night so it's not a hunger issue for him, I think it's more developmental factors and separation anxiety. Some babies STTN, some don't. xx

It got wayy easier for us when i stopped comparing J's sleeping patterns to others, and just accepted he was a naff sleeper, and one day he will grow out of it (regardless how long that took)
at 14 months he started sleeping better, he previously used to wake anything from20 to 40 times and started the day at 2am, sometimes 1am, the HV's wouldn't believe me when i told them he only slept 4 hours out of 24, broken, they thought i was imagining things!

He sleeps so much better now, i don't know what made him change, we didn't do CIO or anything, he wakes around 2-4 on a good night, or if he's teething then obviously wakes more.

My advice, caffeine and acceptance..

I dont think filling a child full of sugery stuff is good for them at night. Even some sleep trainers who I despise wouldnt recommended that one. I just wait, its normal, it passes. I survived and the sleep longer now.

can I join? I went back to work on Tuesday and all I got was "oh why doesnt she sleep yet? Have you tried....?"
I just smiled. I have a happy, intelligent, fantastic, funny little girl, she's just a crap sleeper! we've had a few good nights in the last 2 weeks, only waking twice. but sometimes it's 10 times. It can be hard and yes, I cry sometimes and beg he to sleep, but if feeding her back to sleep works sometimes, I'm up for it!

Same here And when I was desperately posting over a year ago 'why doesnt my baby sleep', Aliss helped me to find acceptance - and it was the best (only) thing to do really
I'm not sure about the custard either. I think what we need is packet mixes of acceptance (to be mixed with caffeine).
Great thread

Welcome to all the new joiners x my baby had a massive bowl of pasta, butternut squash chicken and veg for dinner followed by a massive yoghurt and a full breastfeed. Still didn't sleep through. It's not a food issue for him either he's a wonderful eater. Intact he's wonderful at everything but sleep! LOL

All through his early life people were making me paranoid my breastmilk wasn't filling him up as he woke loads and barely napped although he jumped from the 50th percentile to off the chart.

That's why acceptance works as all the usual tips and tricks don't! We're just as shocked as you ashley_gee as to why our older babies still don't sleep. It's because no one gave them the memo on how society expects them to sleep. All through life we are judged for being different and it starts from birth where the only thing we seem to judge parents and babies on is their sleep patterns. I know when my baby is grown no one will say "ooh he's such a great bloke, he sleeps all night!"

So glad to see you all here x

Sorry I wasn't very clear on my post! I made homemade custard for LO, with 0 sugar, ok it didnt taste great but it wasn't for tasting anyway lol. Also, I didn't assume baby was hungry, yeah babies wake for lots of reasons but the feeling of being full should knock them out for longer. You know what its like after a big dinner, you jus wanna sleep. I admire you ladies, I was luckily, and as I have an illness which requires me to gets lots of sleep, this was perfect (CFS btw) - I dunno how you do it but well done

Ah, bless you, it's nice when gals acknowledge that they're lucky if their baby is a good sleeper, rather than coming off smug like they've got a magic secret. Thanks hun
And I kind of agree with you, I always feel more optimistic for a better (not perfect) night if JJ has eaten well, or that I can at least eliminate it from the list of possibilities when he wakes anyway! If you've got a live wire though, acceptance is crucial to your mental well-being, which is why this kind of thread is so welcome and important.
Im glad your baby sleeps well if you need to sleep a lot cos youre ill. I dont know what CFS is, but I hope it is something that will improve/go away in time hun xx

Ironically mine sttn!! 7pm straight-6:30am, a miracle! Although at 2, I am running into the problem of too much day sleep (yeesh whatever happened to "no such thing as too much sleep"). Looks like we're done with naps
