Like a PP said, gagging and choking are very different. Aslong as your LO isnt struggling to breathe and isnt going blue, it's fine!

we just went into it assuming nothing bad was going to happen- a couple of times she has coughed- one time she has thrown up- and she does gag- but its deliberate so she can bring the food to the front of her mouth again. And regards to allergies I figure the best way to find out if she has allergies is just to assume she doesn't have them. Eggs i introduced in a piece of cake, strawberries was in yoghurt and I just this week got over my fear of peanuts and gave her some of my satay. If you and your partners family don't have a history of food allergys they should be ok- if you do have a history - talk to your HV or Midwife or doctor for guidance.

I remember feeling the same as you. I desperately wanted to do BLW but had severe anxiety and fear of choking. We ended up doing TW in a baby-led way, meaning I gave him cereals and purees but I allowed him to feed himself with the spoon which he very quickly learned to do. You'll often hear BLWers say never purees but the truth is that BLW means to let the baby feed himself and there is absolutely nothing wrong with purees. The problem with purees happens when you keep them on purees too long and not introduce finger foods. We went from purees straight to finger foods, the truth is that even if you do purees and move on to lumpy foods you'll still get gagging because spoon feeding eventually teaches a baby to suck down food rather than chew it. You don't have to skip purees, you can use them as a stepping stone to finger foods. Take your time and don't let anyone make you feel like you're taking the wrong approach to feeding your baby.

The original concept of BLW by Gil Rapley means no purees. You can wean and follow baby's lead, but it's not BLW in the technical sense

Thank you to everyone.

Evasmum, DH and I are going to take another class.

I appreciate everyone's advice. As for food allergies, I have them, and I have a lot of them. They are very severe (throat swellling, etc.), so we'll talk to the doctor before we start anything.

Thank you again, ladies! You're all so helpful.
