Any Advice??

Hello!

My little girl is 3 months old, and has been exclusively breastfed up until about a week and a half ago when I went back to work. She is given both formula and breastmilk when I am away at work.

Yesterday, she had about 4 oz of formula at around 3 in the afternoon. For the rest of the day she drank breastmilk. Last night around 10, I noticed her BMs were a bit runny. She woke up at 2 am with another runny bm. At 7 she had another. At 8:30, she had blood in her stool, so we went to the ER. The doc checked her out, said she looks fine, and said it is probably from the formula. He sad to keep giving her both breastmilk and formula and to follow up with my regular doc on Monday. He suspects that she has a milk intolerence, so if the symptoms don't get better, we will have to switch her to soy.

However, since 8:30 AM, she has had 6 bms, each time with blood in it. Can this really be from formula? We didn't have any issues with her formula until now. She never spit up, never had diarrhea...until now.

Does anyone have any advice/experience/words of wisdom?? I don't know what to do!

What colour is her stools? blood is usually caused from straining but if its runny there wouldnt be any straining... Do you have cracked nipples by any chance? The blood could be passed through you

You can get blood from gastroenteritis type things but I'd expect a temperature with that. If she seems well in herself then cows milk intolerance is likely as loose, frequent, bloody stools is apparently a classic sign.

Thanks for your replies, ladies! My nipples are fine, not dry or cracked.

She has streaks of blood in her stool...the doctor examined her for fissures, but didn't find any. She has no fever, but she is not eating well today at all. When I introduced the formula a week and a half ago, she didn't have any issues with it until now. I guess I'm just confused as to why she wouldn't exhibit any symptoms right away if she has a milk intolerence? I hope the answer is as easy as switching her to soy formula.

I'm sure I read somewhere that milk intolerant children are highly likely to be intolerant of soy too. Don't know what you can do with that info though...soz...

Update

Well, my poor baby has been admitted to the hospital. They don't think it is her formula; we are still waiting for test results. Poor poor angel!

They think it was a bad virus. The pediatrician yesterday still tried to pin it on formula; a different one this morning said that is very unlikely since she didn't have any negative reaction when we first introduced it to her. So frustrating! Thank goodness we got to go home today. She still has a bit of diarrhea, but is eating better. Phew. What a relief.

My baby had diarrhea for almost 3 weeks and it was determined that she developed an intolerance to her formula. She is now on Alimentum, which is hypoallergenic and she is doing really well. Soy is usually not a good idea for babies who have problems with cow's milk, as they often struggle with soy too.
