Breastfeeding Question

I am having problems with breastfeeding right now. We are combo feeding due to me not having as much milk as Evelyn needs, but I would like to somehow figure out how to produce more milk so we can go back to breastfeeding her and expressing full time. (Nothing against formula feeding personally, it is just so expensive here. We do get WIC but as I was breastfeeding LO and not supplementing at all we do not get any formula from WIC, and instead receive healthy food (milk, veggies, etc.).

I always nurse Evelyn first, she has a good latch and will typically feed for an hour (about 30 minutes on each side) and I burp afterwards and at the 15 minute marks as if I burp her sooner she won’t burp and any later and she will spit up. This is fine but after about an hour she begins to get really restless and fussy. When I try to put her back on the first breast she refuses to nurse and gets even fussier. I make sure her diaper is clean/dry and then if she is still fussing offer formula. (At this point if she is fussy like this she refuses a binky as well) She will usually drink down 2-4 ounces but the last few days she has been drinking up to 6oz a go! After that she is perfectly content , is smiley and sweet for a little while before she falls asleep.

Not really sure what to do. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Do I need to be pumping in between feeds? When I pump lately nothing or very little comes out as she drinks it all out.

Thanks!

Try posting in the breastfeeding group, they will be able to offer the best advice. There are suppliments you can take that boost your milk supply. Some foods help and some herbal medications. You could ask to be refered to a lactation specialist. I dont know what is available to you there. I saw a breastfeeding support midwife for support and ended up trying to exclusively express although it was a pain as with him not feeding directly from the breast my supply dropped and eventually at around 14 weeks post birth disappeared.

Have a look in the breastfeeding forum but in order to build your supply you need to keep stimulating ie either having LO feed or pumping. There are also some herbal remedies you can take (fenugreek). It can be done but will be hard work. Good luck!

Fenugreek works great! I take about 9-12 pills a day. usually 12. 4 pills 3x's a day
Your arm pits might smell like maple syrup though.
I didnt tell my husband I was taking these and in bed one night asked me if I smelt pancakes

I asked husband to buy me these and he got me a bottle a couple of weeks ago, but the bottle only says take 2 a day I wonder if it is the same thing? It is the same name. So I have only been taking 2 x day oops.

He brought me back some mothers milk tea from the store today too. Have to say I am not too wild about the smell of it, but it tastes wonderful!

Hiya....
I would probably stop feeding formula.... Go to bed with your baby for a couple of days, lots of skin to skin and just feed feed feed.... Your baby is trying to up your supply for you by demanding lots of feeds.... It's called cluster feeding and it's baby's way of making you produce the amount of milk she needs....
So just feed from the breast every time baby demands and for as long asshe demands and you will have the milk she needs.
When you top her up with formula you are not stimulating your milk production...

It's hard work but to make breast feeding work you have to let baby stimulate your milk production.... So pick a few movies, gather all your supplies (snacks, nappies etc) and let the feeding marathon commence
