I'm sorry, but That is quite possibly the funniest bit of MIL advice ever!
I know my MIL is a weirdo lol. I am told constantly Im doing stuff wrong, she was very put out at the weekend since LO didnt want to be held by her and instantly reached out for me I am a horrible person due to I was pleased, I get these pearls of wisdom from her constantly. It was such old fashioned advice, my grandma who is in her late eighties didnt even beleive this one. My cats will come say hello to LO and occasionally sit behind her when she is breastfeeding but genrally stay out of the way since LO likes to pat and pull fur I have to say they have never tried to steal her breath and to be honest why would a cat even be interested in the smell of breast milk

I got the cat story too! "your cat will try and sleep on LO face because they can smell milk on the baby's breath"!!! My cat doesn't even like milk!! Lol

I also upset mil's mum when I told her (for the tenth time) that LO wouldn't be having rusks because they are high in sugar - I got looked at like I was evil and told "there's no sugar in rusks". Erm the box says otherwise!!

It's so funny how some grandparents try to claim ownership over their grandchildren! But honestly, they'll choke on finger foods before 1? Surely they're more likely to choke if they don't have any until they have a whole load of teeth but haven't learnt to chew?!

That actually makes me feel so much better...I think my boyfriends mum (they're scottish) is against slings and that...but I guess because I'm german it will be okay for me to use! never thought to play the foreigner card!

"Sorry, this is the way we do that in Germany."

Stupidest thing I have heard was before I was pregnant. We were in IKEA in the food bit having lunch and there was a lady with a crying baby (looked only a few weeks old, if that) she did her best to soothe him/her, but they wouldn't stop crying. The person I was with said "no wonder he's crying, she's handling him too much!"

Am I missing the point of having children or something? Why have them if your going to lock them in a room on there own. They are totaly dependent on us for every thing so its understandable that at times they might just want a cuddle off mummy or daddy, I realy cant see the problem in this and to be honest theres times when I want LO to wake up so I can have some cuddles lol.
Hes only 18 days old and I cant ever imagine letting him cry just so he doesnt get "needy" or "demanding" If it turns out that all these people are right and im making a rod for my own back, ill address the issue when needs be. In the mean time, if he wants a cuddle, hel have one & we will both enjoy it, if he cant settle at night, he will sleep in my bed, its an amazing feeling waking up next to my LO

I'm horrified that your babies want cuddles! How dare they?

"You don't trust anyone with Alex. That's why he wants you all the time."

"You LO cries at night because he wants his Grandma!!!" Yes that is coming from my own mother. No mum he's crying because he wants a cuddle from his MUMMY!

"You'll make a rod for your own back" Cuddling LO because he was crying around Asda

"Dip his dummy in Jam or Honey, it won't ruin his teeth"

"Your baby is manipulating you by crying for you" This really grinds my gears. He is crying for his mum because he wants his mum, not because he's taking the piss out of me!!

Breastmilk is just food and my baby is thirsty i should give some water (baby was around 6weeks old)....tried explaining about foremilk and hindemilk but didn't work.
When i questioned how mothers in thirdworld countries that breastfeed would get water into baby i was told they wet a piece of cloth and squeezed the water into babies mouth!?!?

Not only is that a load of rubbish but its highly unsanitary!
