For me, i just wanted to contemplate every possible name & choose the one i thought was the absolute nicest.
I wanted something that was spelled like it's pronounced bc my name (Tamara) is always misspronounced... so that was one of my main criteria.
I also wanted a name that didn't have any obvious nicknames for teasing or negative associations.
I wanted something that was new & modern, or maybe just a bit trendy, but not overly used (my son's name has become quite popular tho!!)
For a boy, i wanted a masculine name that wasn't unisex (although, Jayden turned out to be a unisex name after all!!)
And for a girl, i wanted a super feminine, girly, pretty name! (Had Arianna, Kaylana, Abriella on my list)
So, those were all the things i took into consideration. I'm not into the tradition of naming the baby after someone, & the meaning or heritage doesn't personally matter to me... but if the name has a nice meaning... that's a bonus! My son's name, Jayden, means "gift from God"!
Earl Francis came about because his grandad is Francis and Earl because we liked the fact that it's a traditional name, a good strong meaning (Nobleman) and no real problems with spellings etc. It's unusual without being made up, which we didn't want. If he had been a girl he would have been a Daphne Rose - no real meanings or anything, we just like the name and the way it flowed with our surname (Fleming).
We have a couple of names lined up for the next one. I don't tell though, becuause Earl was supposed to be a Jacob, then a Matthieu, then an Angus, but when we told people they said things that made us think twice.
