How do you choose your childrens names?

I like uncommon names that mean something and also have something to do with their heritage. Here are some examples.

My lineage is French & Irish.

So my first child (daughter) is named Isabeau. It is french and it means beauty.

My first son has a dutch name since his dad is dutch. Dedrick. Means gifted ruler.

My third son has an Irish name. Ronan. Means little seal.

My next child is going to have an Irish name since my spouse is also Irish. If it is a girl then Saphira Enya. Saphira means Good Hearted and Enya means fire.

If it is a boy my spouse has chosen Connor. Means wise.

So how did you come up with your childrens names or go about finding one that fits?

With the girl my MIL never had a girl so it was known ahead of time that she would want her middle name in there so Brianna Michelle was born in the girl name catergory

For me, i just wanted to contemplate every possible name & choose the one i thought was the absolute nicest.

I wanted something that was spelled like it's pronounced bc my name (Tamara) is always misspronounced... so that was one of my main criteria.

I also wanted a name that didn't have any obvious nicknames for teasing or negative associations.

I wanted something that was new & modern, or maybe just a bit trendy, but not overly used (my son's name has become quite popular tho!!)

For a boy, i wanted a masculine name that wasn't unisex (although, Jayden turned out to be a unisex name after all!!)

And for a girl, i wanted a super feminine, girly, pretty name! (Had Arianna, Kaylana, Abriella on my list)

So, those were all the things i took into consideration. I'm not into the tradition of naming the baby after someone, & the meaning or heritage doesn't personally matter to me... but if the name has a nice meaning... that's a bonus! My son's name, Jayden, means "gift from God"!

Earl Francis came about because his grandad is Francis and Earl because we liked the fact that it's a traditional name, a good strong meaning (Nobleman) and no real problems with spellings etc. It's unusual without being made up, which we didn't want. If he had been a girl he would have been a Daphne Rose - no real meanings or anything, we just like the name and the way it flowed with our surname (Fleming).

We have a couple of names lined up for the next one. I don't tell though, becuause Earl was supposed to be a Jacob, then a Matthieu, then an Angus, but when we told people they said things that made us think twice.
