My LO is getting a family name, it's quite long but he'll be known as Nico as a nickname. When people have asked about names I usually just tell them Nico, some have asked what it's short for so I tell them and some of the reactions haven't been good. Honestly I'm over it now though, thats his name, myself and my OH like it and I can't imagine him being called anything else.

Thinking about it, even my doctor tried to convince me to give him a more Irish name

Ahhh i wrote a whole post and my stupid computer lost it!!! The short of what i was saying was:

I had a friend at school called Cora and i never realised it wasnt a "proper" name, what does that even mean?!?!?!

When we were TTC we wanted Willow for a girl and my parents and sister were really funny about it. Now me an dDH are currently thinking Darcey for a girl, but we are not going to tell anyone till baby is born, just in case they dont like it.

For a boy i think we will have Austin, which my family like anyway.

We are not sharing our names for this very reason.
I like your name choice by the way. People can talk all they want, if this is the name you love then go ahead and use it.

This is exactly why we didn't tell anyone the names we had picked for DS....and won't be telling for this one until he/she is born. While I was pregnant with DS we shared names and someone ALWAYS came out with a stupid "makes me think of" or "sounds like" or "i used to know a boy named..." comment.

Ignore them and just keep it to yourself if you can. Nobody can say to the face of a couple of new parents holding their precious bundle that they don't like the name they have chosen.

I'm naming my daughter Cora Grace Alea. Alea is after my older sister Alea, Cora and Grace are names I simply adore. My brother's fiancee kindly told me she didn't like the name Cora as "it wasn't a real name name" so I reminded her that when it's her time to have a baby, I'll be quick to give my two cents on the name she has planned for her child.
Cora's a lovely name, I think. Different but not too different. To me, it sounds soft but strong at the same time.

I thought of the name Malaia or Malia for a girl.. pronounced ma-lay-uh or ma-lee-uh and I was told Malaia sounds like malaria. Made me sad because I really liked that one, more than Malia even.

OP I just wanted to say that I know a man named Bear and he's a wonderful person. The name really suits him and I'd be proud for my son to be like him. Stick with the name you love

YES!!! I am sick of it too! People have no right to criticise your names. Everyone has different tastes. I don't like mainstream popular names but I wouldn't tell someone I don't like their choice for their baby... it's like as soon as you have an unusual name picked people think they have free range to be rude.

I'd wait until the baby is here then tell everyone that _____ has arrived. People are less likely to make a comment about the name once the baby is here and called that name.
