Falling pregnant while breastfeeding.

How likely is it to get pregnant while breastfeeding, if your period hasn't returned yet? I'm tandem nursing, and have been for the past 8 months. I haven't had a period since my son was born.

I think they say breastfeeding can make becoming pregnant harder but its definately isnt a prevention method. You can still get pregnant.

You've got a pretty small age gap which means you must have gotten pregnant pretty early on whilst feeding your first baby?

Fertility returns when nursing input falls below a certain level. What this level is varies vastly from woman to woman. For me this didn't happen until DD was feeding 3 times a day and STTN at 12.5 months old. Tandem nursing means total nursing input will need to fall below this level. But as babies get older milk changes and they can have smaller amounts of high concentrated milk at each feed.

Since your baby is over 6 months and weaning the amount of milk he takes at a feed is falling. Therefore your fertility could return at any time. The LAM (Lactational Amenorrhoea Method--- ie breastfeeding as contraception) only applies when you are exclusively breastfeeding a baby under 6 months and your period hasn't returned.

My period returned right after having my first, because he was born 11 weeks early, and I was pumping, not breastfeeding at the time.

I should have worded my post differently. What I meant to ask was, how likely is it to get pregnant while breastfeeding if your period hasn't returned yet.

Thanks for the info though!

I'm not relying on it. I was just curious. Thanks!
