I need help!! I Exclusive pumped for the first 3 weeeks of my baby due to her inability to latch, after that we moved onto the nipple shield which made her latch somewhat better but not perfect. I have been trying so hard to wean her off of it and we have been nursing without it for 2 days, now I am over the moon for this little achievement but I'm worried, feeding hurts! It hurts while feeding but the pain is manageable but my nipples stay sore after no matter how much lanolin I apply. I noticed my daughter makes a strange clicking sound when she feeds and it hurts, plus she can only keep the breast in her mouth for little time as it keeps slipping out?and after the feeding my nipple comes out in a funny shape, like with a very noticeable crease in the middle. She seems to have a good latch but why is this hapenning? I won't be able to meet with a lactation consultant till Tuesday, and I don't want to go to the shield meanwhile bc it was such a hard work to get her off it. Sorry for the long post
hiya the clicking does sound like an incorrect latch have you tried changing positions? when my lo did this i did the football hold (propped up on cushions to the side under your arm) this made sure that she had enough nipple in her mouth and it couldnt slip out and end up breaking the latch
Sounds like a slightly off latch to me too. Mine were a bit sore for the first week or so, but not painful! I would see a lactation consultant asap as you'll be miserable if that carries on. The clicking noise is air getting in which will cause your LO more wind too which will upset them. x
Thanks everyone, I also think the latch is wrong, I have tried the football hold but we need more practice. I have also BF standing up in my moby in the kangaroo hold and she does fine , I think is because she tilts her head a luttle bit more back and opens her mouth wider.
Try the "laid back nursing" position. Works good to get a deep latch. Kind of tricky to figure it out at first. Was for me anyway. But it is a good skin to skin position and baby can take more nipple in that way. You can google it for pics
