my 20 month old wants to be fed on demand

and it's exhausting me,

I was hoping we could be weaned before the end of the year but at this rate it's not going to happen, if he had it his way he would be fed between 6-8 times a day - instead we're getting the most monumental tantrums trying to cut down to around 2-3ish. Literally scratches, biting, slapping. I always offer him milk and water, and he doesn't seem to actually be hungry. He's also started to wake up though the night for feeds but wont drink water so it's not thirst. Does anyone have any tips? It's making me so crabby and impatient, same with OH who's wanted me to wean him off for months now. What can I do to ease the process?
