feeding routine for a 6 week old

At what times/how many times during the 24 hour period was your LO feeding at 6 weeks?

Did you have a last feed of the early evening, say 7.00 and let the baby lead the way or did you dream feed?

Did they take one, or both breasts at each feed?

How long did the feeds generally last for...

Thanks xx

I dont think there is a right or wrong amount. If you're demand feeding it could change from one day to the next. Babies also extract the milk in their own way so one baby any take 5 mins to get the same amount that another takes an hour over.

I'm a BF Mother Supporter and I would say to you that comparing babies isnt a good idea. If he is weeing and pooing and seems alert and contented then he's doing just fine.

Can't really remember how many feeds he had he did feed alot though, every couple of hours I think, I would just feed him when he was hungry He had a growth spurt at that point and fed on the hour every hour day and night for two days, I think when he was that little he did get offered the other side, and he fed for about 20 mins or sometimes longer if he was comfort sucking, now he only feeds from one side for 10 mins every 2 hours so he must have got better at it,
Hope this helps although they are all different my freind fed all of her kids for 1 hour every 4 hours!!

Hi Diz

At the moment Chayce's feeding is normally every three hours but he has been feeding every 2- 2.5 hours the last three days. He normally feeds on one side for 10-15 sometimes 20mins.
At night he has his normal feed after bath at around 730pm then goes down about 830pm.Then wakes every three hrs after. The other night he went down at 830 then woke at 1230am.then didnt wake for a feed until 530, but hasnt happened again....lol.
I was also interested to know whether anyone dreamfeeds?

How is Noah, what are his feeds like?

at six weeks my little boy fed every 1-2 hours, both sides, for between 15minutes-90 minutes.

They are all so different, and as long as he is weeing and pooing plenty and gaining weight steadily (watch breastfed babies' weight gain over a period of a month rather than week-by-week) you can be sure they are getting what they need. Feeding on demand is the way to go!

We have always demand fed and it often changed from day to day. However, on average, he would eat every 1-2 hours, for about 5-10 minutes, usually one side, sometimes both. He eats super fast and always has. We co-slept and bed shared all through the night because he was eating every hour or two. When I was lucky he would go 3 hours between feeds, but that was rare.

I never set a time for him, but he did settle on his own routine for a short while. Right around 6 weeks he set a routine which lasted about 2-3 weeks -- almost every night it would be 730, 930, 1130, 130, 330, 530, 730. That was probably 6 of 7 nights with a random, off rountine night thrown in just to keep me on my toes! The times might vary by 15 minutes either way, but not by much. It got to where I would wake up and go "It must be 130am" look at the clock and was right.

I am at 6 weeks and I am feeding every 2 hours at night, and more probably every 1-2 hours in the day. He does feed for a long time each time, always from both boobs, usually for about an hour in total. This is knackering me at night!

Noah usually feeds every 3 hours during the day. The past couple of days its been more like 2 hours (must be 6 week growth spurt). If he is feeding and not tatting around using me as a dummy, it usually takes him 20 mins. Some times he wants the second boob and sometimes not.

I usually cluster feed late after noon so today he's had a feed at 3.30, then now (5.00), then he will have a bit of a cat nap and a bath around 6.00, then another feed and bed at 7.00

I have been dream feeding at 10.00 ish, then he wakes at 12, and 3, and 6 (give or take 30 mins)

Last night i feed him at 7.30, did not bother with the dream feed and he didnt wake up until 12.30am.. i think 5 hours is the longest he's lasted without wanting to be feed.
