bfing and drinking

im going out on thursday night clubbing, obviously i BF naomie so that makes going out a bit more awkward than just finding a babysitter

im going to express some milk for her for while im gone but i have a few questions

first of all, how much do i leave for her? i will be gone from around 11 till around 4, i'll feed her just before i leave as much as i can get her to take so will i only need to leave her maybe a few feeds worth? how much expressed milk do babies her age need? 3oz per feed?

secondly, how long after drinking is it safe to BF again, she wakes up in the night for feeds obv so i presume i'll have to express more milk for the night and just express and chuck it?

i didnt go out till leyla was about 6months old last time so im clueless

xxx

oh i should probably point out that im not going to be drinking loads, no doubt i will be hammered off 2 drinks since ive only been out twice since i got pregnant with leyla lol, so if i only have two drinks am i still safe to feed her even if im hammered? is it more to do with units than tolerance?

I was just in this situation also.

It takes an hour for each beer you drink to leave your system.
So i would pump some extra for her night feedings to allow time for it to leave completley.
And they drink about 3-4 ounces each feed.
I had pumped so much extra just in case.

the amount of alcohol that passes in your breastmilk is very small, i wouldn't worry about it. leave enough for 2 feedings, 6-8oz should be plenty.

I've heard an hour per drink Like per shot or beer or regular glass of wine. I've had 2 beer since having Kayleigh and they were both within the past month LOL... I'm not a drinker at all anyways hehe but think I'm due for an evening out.. maybe LOL

Have fun!

I found this to be very helpful:

"In general, if you are sober enough to drive, you are sober enough to breastfeed. Less than 2% of the alcohol consumed by the mother reaches her blood and milk. Alcohol peaks in mom's blood and milk approximately 1/2-1 hour after drinking (but there is considerable variation from person to person, depending upon how much food was eaten in the same time period, mom's body weight and percentage of body fat, etc.). Alcohol does not accumulate in breastmilk, but leaves the milk as it leaves the blood; so when your blood alcohol levels are back down, so are your milk alcohol levels.

Always keep in mind the baby's age when considering the effect of alcohol. A newborn has a very immature liver, so minute amounts of alcohol would be more of a burden. Up until around 3 months of age, infants detoxify alcohol at around half the rate of an adult. An older baby or toddler can metabolize the alcohol more quickly."

Enjoy your night out!
