Switching from breast to formula milk

Hello everyone.

I am a first time mum to a 17 week old baby girl

After 7 weeks of trying following her birth I finally managed to get her to latch on for her feeds. Prior to that I was expressing and giving her breast milk via a bottle. We are now at a point where she is still on breast milk but has half of her daily feeds in a bottle and half on the breast but still all breast milk but I fear we are getting to the point where my milk is not satifying her needs.

I am after some advice as to what formula you have used and would recommend. Some of my family members swear by SMA gold and other family members and friends have said Aptimil is best.

I am still happy breastfeeding her at the moment but would just like to weigh up the options before making the switch in the next few months.

Any advice and recommendations woudl be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Vikki

This would probably get more information in the FF section.

How do you know your milk isn't satisfying her?

Is she gaining weight? Does she have 6-8 wet diapers a day? If so...it sounds like she's fine.

She weighed 5lb 2oz at birth and now weighs 11lb 1oz so is gaining weight nicely and she does have 6-8 wet nappys a day - sometimes more

Lately she has been taking 150ml throughout the day and her last feed consists of 200ml plus 10-15 minutes on the boob. She only sleeps for 6 hours at the most - she seems to be hungry more often than she was a few weeks ago and sleeping less of a night than before so that is making me think that my milk is not filling her up

Friends of mine feed there babies formula and there LO sleep for about 8 hours at night.

She could be going through a growth spurt at the moment. Babies eat more when they are breastfed because they digest it faster and it's easier for them to digest.

Formulas are basically similar (all must meet WHO standards) and different babies take to different ones differently. So there isn't a best, just ones that work for your baby.
All babies are different in regards to sleep. Some sleep well on formula and others do not. Giving formula for sleep isn't guaranteed to work. You don't say how old she is, but it does sound like a growth spurt. Putting her to the breast/pumping more will encourage your milk to increase.

Thanks venusrockstar, It could be a growth spurt - she did have one of these a few weeks ago but fed more through the day and slept through the night

The HV seem happy with her growth and I will keep on breastfeeding her for as long as I possibly can - its what is best for her at the end of the day - I just hope I can keep up with her demands
