hi i'm thinking of letting maddie have just a teeny spoonful of baby rice, but what do i mix it with? do i pump some? or formula? do i have to sterilize everything? i'm not looking forward to that iv'e enjoyed not doing any of that for the past 4 months!!
Here in Canada our cereals are either add bm/formula or add water (this kind already has milk ingredients in it). I express milk for her cereal, but using formula is fine too. Also, I don't sterilize the utensils/bowl for her solids and never have. I figure if she's licking the floor, the dishes washed in hot, soapy water is likely enough. Also, if you're using bm you don't need to sterilize the pumping equipment all the time either. The instructions that came with my medela pump said to sterilize before the first use, but that just washing in hot soapy water is fine from there on in as bm doesn't have the same bacteria growing capabilities as formula.
breastmilk breaks down baby rice (which in the Uk is just grounded up rice with thiamin added) so you would need to keep adding more and more rice to make it anything like a thin paste, I'd personally try and wait a bit longer too hun, I found with my others that if you get past the 4 month hurdle then BM is enough for them and will usually keep them going until 6 months xx
