Feel like I have been punched in the chest...

I have had mastitis 3 times now and its not that as I know what that feels and looks like but am in absolute agony and have no idea what it is or whats causing it.

The last 2 nights I have become incredibly engorged at night, when this hasn't occured since the first week when my milk came in. No matter how much milk my son drinks they don't seem to go down to what they do during the day. Then last night my chest began to really hurt. The centre of my chest feels like I have been punched or been working out like crazy in the gym. I cant even bear to touch it as its so sore. I am taking co-codamol for the pain which I have left over from the last time I had mastitis (2 weeks ago).

I really want to keep feeding my son but really don't think I can do this anymore. I would be so grateful if someone could give me some advise as to what they think this is or how I an get it to stop. Last time I had mastitis the Dr said I really should stop feeding as otherwise I was running serious risk of future problems such as an abcess - could it be that?

Thanks for reading, it is much apppreciated.

Hi Hun, go to the docs ASAP you may get antibiotics. I had mastitis so know how painful it is! I would check latch with a breastfeeding consultant if you can. I was getting lots of blocked ducts until my latch improved and haven't had problems since. Did you try different holds? Rugby hold was the best fir me during mastitis. Hugs!

Thanks for your replies ladies, it is so appreciated.

Just got back from the Drs who have said they think I have something called costochondritis which is basically an inflammation of the muscles between the ribs and those which attach the ribs to the sternum. Its not linked to breastfeeding so i can carry on as normal. The Dr said the engorgement is unrelated and he is simply drinking less at night as he is getting older and it will settle down.

However, I have got to go back if I get even a slight temperature as there is still a chance I am developing an abcess however as my temperature was normal i'm keeping my fingers crossed it isn't the start of that.

Have been old to avoid lifting our son as much as possible for the next wek or so, which is fine for the next 2 days but my husband is deploying to Afghanistan on Thursday so hope I am feeling better by then!

Thanks again for your replies, don't know what I would do without the support of the ladies on here X
