The Benefits of a Carrycot

Hello all - this little titbit came up on my facebook newsfeed from iCandy. I don't usually pay much attention but I found this quite interesting and thought others might appreciate the read.

Quote:
iCandy are proud to be at the forefront of offering parents the option to have their newborn in the health promoting lie flat position with the use of an iCandy carrycot. Each model in the stunning iCandy range has a carrycot as an option, enabling parents to give their baby the best start in life.

Health Visitors from The Charity Health Visitor Direct advised: 'Recently we are seeing babies spending more time in their car seats. This is predominantly due to car seats now being designed for attachment on to pram bases. This is ideal for those short journeys where baby is only going to be out of the car for a short period; however it appears that the car seat is often used for long pram journeys, such as shopping trips and many parents are using the car seat instead of a carrycot. Car seats are very important for safe car travel but they are not ideal for other uses. There are some concerns around baby being in the car seat too long.
The safest position for a baby to sleep is flat on their back; and as new babies often fall asleep whilst being pushed in the pram, the best position for them to be in when in the pram is laying flat. There is some evidence to suggest babies who are in car seats are held in a position which can partially compress the chest wall and reduce airway size, resulting in lower levels of oxygen. Keeping a baby in an unnatural curved position for long periods of time might prevent or delay the correct development of the spine.'

O'course, there's an element of this being a sales pitch for carrycots. But at the same time, it's useful as I often feel I have to justify why I bought a carrycot - A lot of people (myself included) can't always be bothered but it's good to know they do serve a purpose lol

would not say that icandy were at the forfront though.
my mum had me in a flat pram 28 years ago and i had a convertable carrycot when i had my eldest 9 years ago.
i do agree totally with the needing to lie flat though, if we are on long car journeys i pull over after a couple of hours and lie lo in carrycot so he can have a good stretch and wriggle while the other two are using the toilet

Hmm agree with this.. when I was born (30 years ago) and when my older kids were born (13, 10 and 8 years ago) the ONLY prams available were the lie flat carry cot types!

Also while I'm putting icandy down lol... one of the icandy prams were on my final short list of 2 prams.. in the end icandy lost as when I wet to test out both prams, my older LO was only 4 months old and she was already too long to fit in the icandy carrycot comfortably.. which would have been useless to me as she wasn't old enough or heavy enough to use the pushchair seat instead!

But yeah, i love prams with proper carrycots, much easier if you have a LO who needs walks to get to sleep, you can just pop the carry cot off the frame and leave them to sleep in it!

Obviously i don't think they're claiming to have invented carrycots lol - I interpreted it more that they consider themselves to be front-runners when it comes to insisting the importance of carrycots.... or something like that I know each child grows differently and iCandy won't be for everyone, but it's still good of them to know that behind the sales tactics there's genuine and useful info/precautions.
