BF and Bones!

Hello Ladies,

I'm very newly pregnant but already thinking about breast feeding! It is something that is hugely important to me but I'm unsure if I will be able to. I have some osteoporosis in my vertebrae as a result of an eating disorder when I was a teenager and I have heard that breast feeding takes a huge amount of calcium from your bones and can lead to fractures. Any knowledge, advice or experience that I can learn from??

Would really appreciate any help!!

your body wouldn't have to take calcium from your bones if you were eating enough of it through diet

thats more of a last resort

I would think that so long as you eat a balanced diet it should be fine, but you could always speak to your doctor about calcium and vitamin D supplementation just in case

There's some info on calcium on Kellymom here, and something on the reduction in risk of osteoporosis here which I assume if you already have it suggests it won't make it any worse. I've heard your bone density actually improves after long periods of nursing.
