Just a few quick questions

Hey ladies, hope you don't mind me posting in here

I plan to breastfeed when LO is here and just have a few quick questions if anyone is free for a minute?

(I apologise in advance if they are the most stupid questions you've heard)

OK, so I've only ever seen people FF, and they often talk about how many oz's of milk they're feeding, so my question is, how do you know how much your LO is getting with BF or is it a case of letting them nurse until they unlatch on their own?

Also, with BF do you also need to stop during feeds to wind them?

Sorry if they are really silly questions

Hi
Congrats on your pregnancy!

You don't know how many oz they are getting, some feeds are longer than others, depends how hungry they are etc. Just as long as they're putting weight on nicely then that's all that matters

I was advised that you shouldn't need to wind bf babies much as they create a tight vacuum around your nipple so really no air should get in. Depends on the feed though, if baby is fussing and latching on off, on off...then in my experience they tend to get wind then. Baby will let you know if they need winding really as they will be uncomfy and get upset (my lo shrieks if he has wind, doesn't happen often though and he is hardly ever sick)

Good luck

xx

Not silly at all

With BF i find it best to feed on demand and let them have as long at the breast as they want. When my LO pulls off I wind him and re-offer and when he refuses I know he's had enough. You won't know how much they've had in ounces, but if they're peeing and pooing enough it's a good sign they're getting enough.

With winding I usually wait til he pulls off and do it which seems to work ok.

A really good website with loads of info re BF is http://kellymom.com/
but ask away here too as there's lots of helpful ladies.

Good luck with it - you're doing the right thing by getting lots of info in advance so you know what to expect

Not silly questions at all!

It's a good idea to keep an eye on how many wet nappies your baby is having, especially in the early days. There's some good information on how to tell they're getting enough here.

The winding issue depends on the baby. If they get a bit wriggly and unsettled while feeding, but still want more milk when they unlatch, then it might be a good idea to wind them in between. Generally though, you're fine to leave it until the end. Some don't seem to need it at all. It's just a case of finding what suits your baby.

Thank you ladies! I felt silly asking now but at the same time didn't want to leave it until the last minute and not be prepared at all.

I'll have a look at the links too.

You're wise for asking.

I wish I'd spent more time on this forum before LO was born as I'd have been a lot more prepared and wouldn't have spent so much time worrying

Best wishes for your pregnancy
