Vallium

Ive git the dentist on Tuesday at 10.30, she gave me Valium to take 2 hours before as I'm terrified of going and I'm having a tooth out

She knows I breastfeed n said nothing and I can find decent info on the Internet.
Can if I feel alert enough still breastfeed while on it?

The British National Formulary says this:

Quote:
Benzodiazepines are present in milk, and should be avoided if possible during breast-feeding.
And I found this page on Kellymom which has some more info (valium is diazepam) - http://kellymom.com/bf/can-i-breastfeed/meds/sedation/

I'd maybe phone your dentist back and ask if they could give you anything else? Alternatively you could call your local pharmacy and speak to a pharmacist - although if the BNF says breastfeeding should be avoided, I'm not sure if they will be able to say anything different to that :-/.

I'm sure I read a thread here not long ago where someone asked a similar question, although it was for flying rather than the dentist. I think the answer was that as a one-off it could be ok, but obviously you need to keep an eye on things.

I hope someone with more experience/knowledge than me can give you a more definitive answer, but I didn't want to R&R as I am a fellow dentist-loather

I need fillings but I'm terrified or syringes so my dentist was going to give me valium. When I said I was breastfeeding she told me just to go back for the fillings once I've stopped bf as I wouldn't be able to bf for 3 days after taking it. That sounded pretty drastic to me but since I wasn't in any pain I jumped at the chance to put it off and didn't question it!

I've just called a pharmacist and he's told me that I shouldn't breastfeed for at least 24 yours after taking Valium.
I'm so mad at the dentist, I told her I bf and she didn't warm me at all. So happy I decided to look into it today for myself.

Called to cancel her and register with another dentist and they aren't making it easy....arses!

Thanks ladies

Was going to tell you its 24hrs, I had severe pre eclampsia on my 3rd and a few days post delivery (I had self discharged!) my hubby insisted I get to the gp to sort my bp meds as my bp was still eratic, got there and it was through the roof the doc turned the lights off and starting examining my eyes, he said I would need to go back to hospital in an ambulance wit blue lights going, I got so hysterical because I thought if I went back to hospital I would die there as my care had been so bad he had to give me valium! He was hoping it would calm me and reduce mybp no such luck and my expressed milk for the next 24hrs (my baby was on scbu) had to be thrown away. Its terrible that the dentist gave you that.

What a awful experience for u

Well the dentist never called me back, I'm never going back to her and she doesn't help the fact I don't like female dentists or doctors lol

My sister said I should save the vallium for when I've stopped breastfeeding and I want a tattoo done, yes I'm stupid I want a tattoo but scared of needles lol

I've booked in with a different dentist but have to wait till the 17th I really need this tooth pulling but no way am I going back to her after she failed to give me any advice
