Currently Feeling:
constipation or infection??

I posted this in baby club but thought I might have more luck here.

So i have a mw appmt later this afternoon but im really concerned and not sure if i have a reason to be. Leo is 3 weeks old and was EBF until his second weekend. He was a home birth but was later admitted to hospital for bilirubin. After one hard night with a bad latch and no weight gain, they started pushing formula on me. The LC said by 9 days old he should be back at birth weight (mw said BS, he has 3 weeks) but they cont to make more appointments and were really stressing me out so mw decided to use formula just to get them off my back and get back to breastfeeding asap. so after 3 days of formula feeding + BF in between he was back at birth weight and the hospital has left us alone. BUT my supply suffered, so we continued to supplement with formula, slowly decreasing the amount. Pumps wont work on me so I started expressing, but now that my supply seems consistent he is pooping much less frequently and screams all day triyng to pass a stool. Ive been continuing to give him a bit of formula twice a day (about 1-2 oz) just to try to help flush it out as sometimes it works, but now I'm thinking its having a cyclic affect. Two days ago it flushed out a massive poo in two parts right before bed- first a nasty green, mossy type of poo that was almost strngy, followed by a softer, normal looking poo. Leo finally seemed comfortable. The next day i gave him another 1 oz at noon and it flushed out a tiny bit more right away, so i thought that was the end of it, but I've been BFing all day even when he isn't hungry and gave him a bit of formula a couple times when his screaming was strongest and he hasn't passed a thing. His stools are normally very cottage cheesy even from a greatly reduced amount of formula. When he does pass, they are NOT hard. He is having lots of wet diapers as well, and my supply seems like its always ready for more.

Do i have a reason to be worried?? one hard to pass stool per day seems off to me at 3 weeks. I am hoping at his weigh-in today he is still on track (last one was on mon, i am coming back to discuss my decisions on breast feeding vs formula). FF freaks me out, infections freak me out, and i want nothing more than to EBF a happy baby.

please ease my mind!!

editing to add that I literally can't set him down all day as he is screaming and writhing unless in my arms. I latch him even just to comfort him through the pain but now I am more concerned because sometimes he can't concentrate on the boob even when he should be hungry ie night feeds and morning feed.

I have the same problem and my Dr gave me a little pot to bring in a sample of my boy's poo! I can just recommend doing the same thing just to be safe!

the screaming is horrible as I can't help him, I know how you feel! just give him a gentle rub, maybe bath him it might relax him a bit! mine is more happy when lying on his tummy on me when he is in discomfort!

hope your lil one is getting better soon! good luck!

ps. for my son it started a day after the first breastmilk-formula mix in his first ever bottle (he was still hungry and my mum didn't have enough expressed milk for him).

Aww how is your LO doing now? He is due for a bath, I think I will leave him naked after with a little tuperware pot and try ECing today. Worth a shot!
