Using an elecric breast pump - question about settings!

Hi,

I have the medela mini electric pump and am wondering which strength setting would be most effective for me. I can go to roughly half way on the 'min - max' scale before it feels sore and according to the manual I should move it down just slightly from where it feels uncomfortable to achieve maximum results. However, I have noticed that I seem to get more milk coming in the first 30 secs or so when the pump is on 'min'. Is that just because more milk will come at first anyway?

I have the same pump and I found that when i first started pumping I couldn't turn it up very far or it would hurt, but as time went on my nipples must have hardened up a bit as now I can turn it to max and it doesn't hurt.

I also get a fair bit of milk coming out straightaway, regardless of setting. Then it slows down until my letdown happens when lots comes out again.

I start with the lowest setting when the breast is really full and when it starts to empty I go up the stronger settings.
